Citizenship: A Birthright?
Senators argue whether US Citizenship should be a birthright and what Constitutional changes are in order and how it will affect Immigration
According to the Christian Science Monitor, "Senator Graham told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren last week that birthright citizenship "is a mistake" and that he "may introduce" a constitutional amendment to change the provision." This debate continues due to what many call a fear of 'anchor babies' being born in the US after undocumented immigrants have them. According to Graham, "it's an irresistible lure to illegal immigrants -- and needs to be revised."
The New York Times reports, "As statements of core values go, the 14th Amendment is a keeper. It decreed, belatedly, that citizenship is not a question of race, color, beliefs, wealth, political status or bloodline. It cannot fall prey to political whims or debates over who is worthy to be an American. "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof," it says, "are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."."
The debate continues and we will follow what comes of the 14th Amendment in years to come. Until then, if you or anyone you know need help with immigration issues. Please contact our office for a free initial consultation. |
2nd Amendment: Right to Bear Arms extended to States
How will this law affect your business? A lesson from Starbucks.
No, we are not talking about Michelle Obama's "bare arms," but a different kind of gun show that has some businesses resisting State laws. In this case, Starbucks, a national brand that has "stuck to their guns in stating the 'Open Carry' policy in some states goes against the vision of the company. "We woke up one day and all the sudden Starbucks was in the middle of this political crossfire between the people who want to bring a gun into Starbucks and the people who want to prevent it," said Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. "It is a very difficult, fragile situation. We're trying to abide by the law." This brings forth another interesting legal question of how different businesses will have to conform to the laws as they change. If you have a business and are in need of advisement regarding any legal question, please do not hesitate to contact us. For more information on this article, please see our blog. |
