Historical Tidbit :

Land for Sale!
In March 1649, the very first land transaction took place between settlers and the native Indians. Sachem (chief) Massasoit sold 14 square miles; seven miles north, east, south and west.
Shortly after this purchase a problem arose, only four of the planned seven miles to the east was available, due to the proximity of another already established plantation (now part of Pembroke). It became necessary to petition the Plymouth court so the center could be moved three miles westerly!
At the same time the court granted permission to purchase additional lands.
Next week: The Chief Peter purchase!
Respectfully submitted, Rob Lundquist
