Hudson Guild Winter Update
| December 2011 |
Dear Friends:
The holiday season is in full swing here at Hudson Guild and although the days may be shorter and colder, it hasn't stopped us from offering a variety of programs and events. In fact, this past fall at the Guild has been the busiest in a long, long time! We took charge of our health. We received a visit from an old friend. We gave away turkeys. We celebrated the achievements of some of our most extraordinary community members. Even more, we worked towards making Chelsea a stronger, healthier neighborhood. I hope you'll take some time to read about these exciting activities, and schedule some time to attend our upcoming events.
We are grateful to all of you for your generosity and support, not only during this holiday season, but all year long. We look forward to working with you in the coming year to deliver even stronger programs and services.
Thank you for all you do to support Hudson Guild and best wishes for the holidays.
Sincerely,
Ken Jockers
Executive Director

NORC & Children's Center Family Health Fair
This year, the Naturally Occurring Retirement Community's Annual Health Fair was bigger and better than ever! The NORC collaborated with the Children's Center to serve approximately 160 children, parents and older adults. We provided flu shots; screenings for high cholesterol, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other health conditions; and nutrition and wellness information -- all at no cost! Attendees enjoyed healthy snacks, massages, raffle prizes, and gift bags. Spanish and Chinese translators were available on-site to meet the needs of our participants. Major health care providers and pharmacies such as Beth Israel, Roosevelt, New York Downtown Hospital, Ryan-Chelsea-Clinton Health Center, Naftali Health Center, NuCare and Confucius-Manning were represented. Local social services and mental health providers included Services and Advocacy to GLBT Elders (SAGE) and our own Mental Health Clinic. Funding for the event was generously provided by the Department for the Aging and Visiting Nurse Service.

Kim Wayans visits Hudson Guild
During Thanksgiving Week, our friend Kim Wayans visited Hudson Guild to read her newest book to the children in our After-School Program. It was obvious from the number of smiles and laughs that the children loved learning about the adventures of Amy Hodgepodge. After the reading, the children had the opportunity to ask Kim about her life as an actress, author, and entertainer. Kim shared her own experience growing up in Chelsea and participating in Hudson Guild programs, and she emphasized the importance of education in helping her achieve her dreams. It was truly inspiring! |
NYCVA Turkey Giveaway
The New York Cardiovascular Associates kicked off Thanksgiving Week at Hudson Guild by generously donating and distributing 100 turkeys to Chelsea community members. Because of NYCVA's kindness, the holidays were made brighter for many families who may not have been able to celebrate Thanksgiving otherwise. |
Thanksgiving Week
During Thanksgiving Week, Hudson Guild hosted more than 400 members of the community at the Ninth Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner and Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Both events were held at the Fulton Center. With the help of more than 50 volunteers, we served 25 oven fresh turkeys, 40 cans of cranberry sauce, 30 pounds of sweet potatoes, 30 pies, and more. It was an incredibly declicious Thanksgiving feast! Special thanks to volunteers from Hilfiger, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Board of Trustees, and the Hudson Guild Junior Advisory Board who donated their time to make Thanksgiving Week a tremendous success. Food for the event was kindly donated by local businesses and individuals including: Google, Whole Foods, Amy's Bread, Spice Market, The Cleaver Co., and C. Edward Ward. |
54th Annual Dr. Elliott Celebration
On Thursday, December 8th, Hudson Guild hosted the 54th Annual Dr. Elliott Celebration, an evening honoring Chelsea's community leaders for their outstanding service and celebrating the life of Dr. John Lovejoy Elliott. This year's honorees included Kathy Andrade (Senior Service Award), Malcolm DeShields (Youth Service Award), and Save Chelsea (Dorothy Epstein Community Service Award). Dinner, which was served by youth in our Teen Services Program, was followed by entertainment by Harold "Stumpy" Cromer, a professional performer who was born and raised in Chelsea and began his career at Hudson Guild. It was a great celebration of leadership, service, and community!
Visit our Facebook Page to watch videos of our 2011 honorees.
