Safety While Surfing - The Internet, That Is
The Suffolk Police Department now has a new tool in their arsenal to combat gang violence and to help parents keep their children safe while surfing the internet. Known as ComputerCOP, this software is an important part of your family's internet safety plan. These CDs were purchased with grant funds from the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program, and currently 1500 copies are FREE to parents that request them.
Since the internet is so readily available to the majority of children, it is important for parents and guardians to supervise their computer activity. While the Suffolk Police Department understands that using computer monitoring software is a personal family decision, they encourage parents to speak to their children regarding their experiences on the internet and the consequences of the choices they make on a daily basis.
This software program has benefits outside of gang violence prevention in that it allows parents to monitor illicit computer usage to include sexual predators and on-line scams that prey on juveniles.
With special "trigger words" in the programs' database which track specific language associated with issues of gangs, substance abuse, possible depression and other problems related to adolescence, parents also have the ability to customize the database to track information which should never be released while "chatting," including their child's full name, home or school address or other personal identifying information. Parents can monitor their child's computer usage at their convenience by simply inserting the CD and running the program, which also scans photos and text files saved on the computer, in addition to providing a keystroke recorder. Also included on the CD are safety tips for parents regarding internet usage.
The gang awareness aspect is important as it has been discovered across the country and in this region that gang members are communicating through computer usage. With this new software, concerned parents will now have the ability to monitor computer usage by their children and deter any inappropriate practices.
Suffolk Police Chief Thomas Bennett stated, "Children require protection and guidance at every age. We are reminded daily that the internet is full of predators that are ready and willing to prey on innocent and unsuspecting children. These criminals use the anonymity of the internet to solicit young victims. Not only did this grant provide us with the funding to provide these CDs, but to also provide training to our officers and to the youth in our community about the importance of safe internet practices."
These CDs (one per family) may be obtained from the Suffolk Police Department precincts located at 230 East Washington Street in downtown, and 1901 Bridge Road in northern Suffolk, weekdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Suffolk's 2009 Small Business of the Year
The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce has named 1Foot 2Foot as the 2009 Suffolk "Small Business of the year." The award was established to recognize performance by small business ventures throughout the region on an annual basis. Companies are judged on their financial success, community involvement and ethical business practices.
Located in the heart of Downtown Suffolk, 1Foot 2Foot is the first integrated foot and ankle facility in the country to include a comprehensive podiatry (foot and ankle specialty) practice, medical spa, fashion comfort shoe store, and physical therapy gym. Dr. Matthew Dairman opened 1Foot 2Foot in 2006 and sees over 200 patients each week in the podiatry office alone. 1Foot 2Foot is committed to patient care and advanced knowledge, which has led the business to grow internally and externally including the expansion of a new office in North Suffolk and the addition of several other podiatrists. The 1Foot 2Foot headquarters transformed a 6,000 square-foot 1920's former movie theatre building into a historically hip medical office and front street retail space. The restoration and transformation represented over $2.5 million capital investment, and was a recipient of a 2007 HRACRE Design Award.
"We're thrilled to be recognized by the Chamber for our hard work and innovation," said Dr. Dairman. "We hope Historic Downtown Suffolk continues to grow and thrive in years to come."
"Small business are an important economic engine for our City," said Mayor Linda T. Johnson. "I am proud that the City of Suffolk continues to provide an environment in which these businesses can thrive and prosper. I congratulate Dr. Dairman and his staff on this award and look forward to seeing what's in store for them in the years to come."
The Suffolk Small Business of the Year Award was presented to 1Foot 2Foot at the Annual Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center.

Suffolk's Waterways Now Safer
The City of Suffolk believes it has taken a major step toward being a viable partner in the support of security for the Hampton Roads Port. The City has been notified that the Police Department will receive $386,450 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Port Security Grant Program. This money will be used to replace an outdated police boat with a new boat, replace an aging dive support truck, replace a boat motor of one of the current serviceable boats and purchase other marine and dive equipment.
According to Debbie George, city spokesperson, "With these assets, the Police Department will be able to better patrol the Suffolk waterways and assist the United States Coast Guard and other local agencies in regional port security. With the continued threat of both foreign and domestic terrorism, all agencies must work together to provide a cohesive security force."
