Dear Members & Friends,
 
Over 75 people joined us for the annual DSAV Member Costume party at Creekside Gardens.  Fall food, fun and crafts were provided by Creekside Gardens and the DSAV.  Read below for more about this annual event.

The DSAV Member Christmas party is around the corner.  Be sure to Register by November 17th for this wonderful family event. 

We are happy to provide DSAV Family grants and conference scholarships to 17 of our DSAV families this quarter.  We look forward to hearing about the activities and programs you and your children participate in.
 
As we head toward Thanksgiving, I hope you take time to give thanks for the blessings in your life.  
We are thankful for the wonderful people, businesses and groups throughout Eastern Ohio and Western PA who support the DSAV and our mission.   Some of their stories are in this newsletter.  Without their support, we couldn't do what we do.  Thank you!

      4th Annual DSAV Costume Party

Mel and Bob Meinke graciously hosted the 4th annual DSAV Costume Party at Meinke's Creekside Gardens on Sunday October 24, 2010.  DSAV members painted pumpkins, made crafts and enjoyed the many fall festivities.  Hotdogs, macaroni and cheese, cookies, chips, drinks and treat bags were provided by the Meinke's and the DSAV.  Sam's Club in Niles donated additional treats!  Thank you to the many volunteers that made this event possible including members of the Jackson Milton Key Club, Warren Junior Women's League and Linda & Nick Maiorana.  Thank you also to Norma & Joe Conti and Walt Kijowski for serving the refreshments.

Congratulations Sandy Meinke - Orlando Raffle winner

The DSAV raffled off an exciting Orlando, Florida Get-A-Way on October 24, 2010 at the DSAV Costume Party.  Sandy Meinke was the lucky winner of the drawing!   $10 raffle tickets were sold beginning at the Buddy Walk of the Valley in August and continuing thru October 24, 2010 to benefit the many programs provided by the DSAV.  This package included a 7 day/6 night Orlando area resort stay, 2 round trip Allegiant Air travel vouchers and 4 one-day Walt Disney World Park Hopper Passes.  Total value was over $2300!  Thank you to area businesses that sold tickets at their locations including Northeast Ohio Orthopedics of Warren and MEGA insurance group in both Lisbon and East Liverpool.  Thank you to Derek Hiscox and Sheryl and Richard Baker for your help in making this raffle possible!  

An incentive prize drawing was also held as a thank you to our valued supporters.  For each set of 5 ticket stubs returned, the seller had a chance to win a fabulous incentive prize package including gift certificates from area restaurants.  Congratulations to Sharon Bettura on winning this incentive prize drawing!

Thank you to everyone who sold or purchased tickets.  You helped us raise over $1,200!

Thank you to Donna Litch and the Austintown Junior Women's League for the generous donation of craft supplies for the DSAV Center for Success.  Co-Founder, Michele Jones, was invited to speak at the October General membership meeting on October 20, 2010 in Austintown.   As a community awareness service provided by the DSAV, presentations on topics related to Down syndrome can be given to various civic groups throughout the region.   Past presentations have been given to Youngstown Kiwanis, Salem Kiwanis, and the Junior League of Youngstown to name a few.  Contact the DSAV Center for success at 330-726-3728 for further information or if you would like to add your group to the DSAV community calendar.

Best Buy Boardman donates $4000 to DSAV

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley was the recipient of numerous Best Buy TagTeam Awards for the volunteer efforts of local Best Buy employees.  When Best Buy employee volunteers offer their service to nonprofit organizations, Best Buy provides TagTeam Awards to recognize their service.   Events such as Golf for a Buddy, a car show and a charity softball event were sponsored in addition to employees volunteering their time at the Buddy Walk of the Valley. 

Thank you to Jack Trella, Darren Austin, Matthew Bowen, Eugene Gordon, Julie Mccarthy and all Best Buy employees for making this possible!

Congratulations to Andrew Gibson!

Andrew represented the state of Ohio at the National Special Olympics games in Nebraska this past July.

Golfing since the age of 11,  the 23 year old Howland High School graduate prepared to fulfill his lifelong dream by joining the Fairhaven Special Olympics golf team about six  years ago.

His score of 44 in the Ohio tournament last year in Cinciannti qualified him for the National games.  
Andrew finished 10th out of 33 golfers in the Level 4 competition!

Way to go, Andrew!

It is time once again for the Millcreek Metro Parks Christmas Tree Display at Fellows Riverside Gardens

 

This year's theme is:  
Winter Celebration - Holiday Scent-sation
 
Be sure to visit the D.D. and Velma Davis Visitor Center through January 2nd to see the DSAV tree among the 45 beautiful trees decorated by various agencies throughout the Mahoning Valley. 

Gardens by Candlelight will be Sunday, December 12th from 5:30pm - 8:00pm.  This is always a lovely evening for the entire family.
