Our friends at the USOD of greater Cleveland have the opportunity to represent the Cleveland Indians at the All Star game in Anaheim on July 13th.

Each Major League team will have one non-profit representing them.  Wouldn't it be great for a Down syndrome organization to be chosen?

Hello Members & Friends,

School is out for most and schedules are filling up with graduation parties, weddings and summer fun.  Congratulations to all the graduates of the Class of 2010.  We are proud of all you have accomplished in your journey through school.  We would love to include some photos of the graduates in an upcoming e-news and on our website.  E-mail them in!

Can you believe Buddy Walk of the Valley is only 75 days away!  We are really excited about this year.  Lots of fresh entertainment and fun for the family.  We hope you are making plans to join us!

We are thrilled to announce that we are hosting the 'i have a voice" traveling gallery coming to the Mahoning Valley for the month of August.  Read below for more details.

As medical studies and resources about Down syndrome expand, it is often hard for physicians to stay up-to-date.  Harvard Medical School is offering on-line courses for physicians; Down Syndrome: Healthcare Updates for the Primary Care Pediatrician. Please be sure to pass this information on to your pediatrician.

We want to welcome our summer interns: Joelle Bettura and Megan Black.  If you call or stop in, these two great young ladies will most likely be the ones assisting you.

Plans are underway for the implementation of some new programs in the fall of 2010 and spring 2011.  Look for more info to come to see  how you can be involved.

~Kelly

voice National Gallery Coming
i have a voice
voice

The i have a voice traveling gallery is a collection of beautifully shot portraits of children and adults with Down syndrome that captures their wisdom, their strength, their very essence.

The portraits, paired with quotations, allows audiences to get to know these unique and inspiring individuals.  Not at a surface level, but more deeply.  A glimpse beyond the diagnosis, and into their souls.

Created by Gigi's Playhouse and photographer Thomas Balsamo, the gallery made its Chicago debut in April 2008. But that is only where their stories begin.

DSAV is proud to be hosting this inspirational gallery in the Mahoning Valley for the month of August!  Look for the debut in late July at the Eastwood Mall.  The gallery will also be at Buddy Walk of the Valley and the Southern Park mall.

Want to get into the Canfield Fair for free?

The DSAV has been asked to have a booth at the 164th Canfield Fair from Wednesday, Sept. 1st thru Monday, Sept. 6th.

This is a wonderful opportunity to promote the DSAV mission and vision to thousands of people who attend this great event.

In order to have a presence at this event, we NEED YOU to volunteer a few hours at the booth and provide information about DSAV to those who may stop by.

We just need 12 volunteers to cover the booth (more would be great).  Shifts will be 10:00am - 2:30pm and 2:30pm - 7:00pm

We will not be permitted to have booth space if we do not have all six days from 10am - 7pm covered.

If you are available, please call the office: 330-726-3728 or e-mail us by June 30th.

Thank you to Michael O'Hara at General Motors Lordstown, who organized an Earth Day celebration and fundraiser for the Down syndrome Association of the Valley.  Cartridges, cell phones and toner cartridges were recycled throughout General Motors and shipped to Advantage Cartridge Recycling.  The DSAV is awaiting the final dollar amount on the funds raised through this program!

If you know any business who would like to partner with the DSAV to recycle and help us raise funds, please contact Michele.

advocacy State Legislative Day
odanlogo
DSAV is one of eight Down syndrome organizations in Ohio that make up the Ohio Down syndrome Advocacy Network (ODAN)

Each May, ODAN sets up a Legislative Day in Columbus to meet with the representatives that serve our members.

This year we were fortunate to meet with  State Senator Jason Wilson, Representative Tom Letson, Representative Ron Gerberry and staffers from the offices of Senator Capri Cafaro, Senator Joe Schiavoni, and representative Bob Hagan.

The DSAV continues to advocate for our families with our legislators and we are happy that our local representatives listen and strive to act on the behalf of those with disabilities.

We are pleased to be assisting the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio in reaching families currently not served by a Ds group in Guernsey & Noble counties.

Why we do what we do...
Our vision is for people with Down syndrome to be active participants in a fully inclusive society.

Our Mission is to provide support, advocacy resources, education and opportunity for those with Down syndrome and their families.

Our Core Values

The DSAV fosters a climate which encourages  independence, support, advocacy and opportunity for all individuals with Down syndrome.

We strive to represent the needs of people with Down syndrome and their families to improve quality of life, preserve rights and advance their interests thereby enhancing their status as citizens and enabling maximum independence and participation in the community.
