MCAS Quarterly Newsletter
|
|
Welcome to Multnomah County Animal Services' quarterly newsletter! We're excited to update you about the many great things we're doing in our unique open-door shelter.
We appreciate your support and we want to keep you in the loop about the gains we've made in caring for our community's stray, abandoned, neglected, abused and surrendered animals. As we strive to keep improving our save rates and community access to low-cost spay/neuter services, we hope to use this newsletter as a way to share our success stories and let you know how your license fees support the shelter.
This first edition includes updates about new programs to help local pets and information about the many ways we all can make a difference. We hope you enjoy it. Feel free to share it or pass it along to the other animal lovers in your life.

New ACT Program Works to Humanely Reduce the Feral Cat Population
| MCAS recently launched a new program, the Apartment Cat Team (ACT). The ACT team goes to specific apartment complexes and mobile home parks with the goal of spaying and neutering 100% of the cats in the complex, whether they are indoor cats owned by tenants, abandoned strays or feral cats. ACT provides spay and neuter assistance to low income cat owners and uses Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) to help manage feral cat populations. We are partnering with the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and Animal Rescue and Care.
ACT is also working with apartment managers to help them ensure that tenants' cats are properly spayed and neutered in order to prevent the problem of cat overpopulation from becoming worse. ACT is actively seeking volunteers. If you want to help, please email ACT@multco.us. |

Funds Raised for Soda Pop to See Specialist
| When Soda Pop came into MCAS as a stray, she quickly became a favorite among staff and volunteers because of her sweet nature. It quickly became apparent that Soda had difficulty with her sight.
MCAS staff worked hard to find a place for Soda with one of our placement partners, Ribsey's Refugees. MCAS Volunteer Lisa Wyatt sprang into action to set up a donation fund for Soda to see an eye specialist and receive specialized training. With a little help by way of a TV news story on KOIN Local 6, Soda Pop has secured sufficient donations to have her special needs assessed by a specialist. Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who worked together to help create a happy ending for Soda Pop! If you're interested in adopting Soda Pop from Ribsey's Refugees, you can view her Petfinder profile here.

Gabe the Cat Gets a Second Chance
| You may have caught this story on OregonLive recently. Gabe came into the shelter as a stray and tested positive for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). FIV can often times be fatal. Infected cats are carriers of the virus and able to pass it along to healthy cats. Unfortunately, MCAS does not have the facilities to safely isolate and care for FIV- positive cats.
But Gabe was such a wonderful cat, that MCAS animal care technician Liz Klobucnik was determined to find a placement for him with an organization that accepts FIV-positive cats. Liz called eight local rescue organizations, but it was "kitten season" and all of MCAS's local placement partners were full. Many phone calls later, Liz was finally able to find a placement for Gabe at Center Valley Animal Rescue in Quilcene, WA, which has separate facilities just for FIV-positive cats. The last hurdle was to find someone to transport Gabe to this animal sanctuary almost 200 miles away. Luckily, MCAS has an amazing team of hard- working and dedicated volunteers. Volunteer Kimberlee Padgett answered the call to duty and delivered Gabe to his comfy new home in Washington. Kudos to everyone involved in finding a sanctuary for Gabe! |

The Doggie Behind Dolly's Fund
| When Dolly came into the shelter several years ago, she exhibited signs of severe mistreatment and neglect. But despite her obvious medical problems, MCAS staff members were captivated by Dolly's spirit. With a great deal of effort, staff members were able to heal Dolly's severe mange; and today, she is the picture of health and happiness. In honor of Dolly, MCAS set up a special donation fund to help pay for animals in need of emergency surgery and other extra veterinary care before they can be placed into new homes. If you want to help animals who are in need of a little extra care, please consider donating to Dolly's Fund. Your donation is fully tax-deductible. To learn about our other donation funds, please visit our "Donate" web page.

Available for Adoption
| "Hi there! My name is Stella and I'm a beautiful grey, brown and cream Lynx-Point Siamese mix. I'm about 5 years old and a bit of a chunky monkey, but cute as a monkey, too! I lived with cats and dogs before. I loooooved the dog, but the cats were mean to me so now other cats kind of stress me out. I haven't lived with kids before, but respectful children should be okay. I'm very playful (I love laser pointers and fluffy cat toys!), but enjoy my lap time as well. I'm quite versatile, as you can see! Come meet me and see what an awesome girl I am." |
