Encaustic Circle Newsletter - May/June 2012
Dear ,

the Greek philosopher Heraclitus wrote: There is nothing permanent except change. And how right he was.
The big change for us is that we sold our Eastside Road home and that I will lose my great studio space. But the good thing is that I found the perfect location to paint, teach and store/ship my supplies!
The new OK Falls Art Factory will open soon in Okanagan Falls, close to Tickleberry's (!), so you can get your ice cream and leisurely wander over and check it out...;-))
If you see the Lake-to-Lake studio sign on the street, I'll be in.

New Work
After the Fire
After the Fire, 16x16, $350.00

My first reaction after we had sold the house was to get down to the studio and paint!

I started on a new series of paintings which all involve some kind of major burning, scorching or torching the surface.
And I did a whole flock of crows again, one of my favourite subjects!

Crow, 4x3, $40.00
Upcoming Workshops/Circles

Circle meeting

Date: Saturday, May 26, 2012

Time: 10 AM - 3 PM

Place: Leir House Penticton
Costs: $10.00

Ongoing:
At my new studio I will continue to offer basic classes on painting with the painting iron, encaustic collages or making your own medium. These can be booked to fit your own schedule.

Online classes:
If you're unable to attend workshops in person online lessons are a great way to learn too. My dear friend Linda Womack, internationally recognized artist, author and art instructor from Portland, OR, is offering a line of classes through wonderful videos. She's always adding new classes, so Check out her workshop website here.

Encaustic on the Road
One of my demo pieces!
In April I went on my first road trip since 2010. I loved the beautiful drive down to 100 Mile House and we had a great time at the workshops, with a beginners program on the first day and hotplate techniques on the second.
A big Thank You to Grace Mills-Hodgins for organizing the workshop!

And I just finished teaching a 3-day hotplate workshop with participants from as far away as Saskatoon!

This is what one of the participants wrote:
Your workshop was fantastic! You inspired, gave us the opportunity to try new techniques, and encouraged each person to grow in the direction that most interested them. Thank you!
I'm blushing from ear to ear....

Coming up in June:
Basics techniques with encaustic iron, June 22
Location: Sheila Gouchie's studio in Vancouver

Number of participants limited to 8!

Please contact Sheila to let her know you're interested.

Mixed Media Encaustic, June 23 and 24

Location: Studio of Jeanette Jarville, Richmond, B.C., The Doorknocker B&B.

I'll be teaching two similar classeson the 23 and 24. (The first day filled up so fast, that Jeanette asked me to teach a second day!).

To sign up: contact Jeanette.

Exhibitions
Spring Palette is the title of an exhibition of fine art, which opens May 25 at Leir House in Penticton.  In the show are paintings by artists from among the 95 members of the South Okanagan-Similkameen Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
This is a juried show and I submitted three new paintings, keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get in!

If you happen to be in town, stop by, take a look, treat yourself to an original work of art, and don't forget to sign the guestbook, so I can see you were there...;-))

Art Trip 2012: May 19 & 20
ArtTrip 2012
Open Studio season has started and I'll be putting my sign out again. Feel free to call ahead to see if I'm open.

This year for the first time ever, Artists' Studios in Naramata, Summerland, Penticton and south to Vaseux Lake, will all hold special open houses on May 19 and 20 from 11 am - 5 pm.
The ART TRIP is a free self guided driving tour that will create a memorable day or two. Click the poster for more information.
This will be the last big event in my old studio on Eastside Road and I'll be delighted to welcome you there.
You can put your name in for a draw to win this lovely original encaustic painting:

Finally I could put my hands on some tips which fit the new, screw-in type, stylus!
This set includes a handle, in which you can screw in the tips and use them cold, or in soft wax, like when working on the hotplate.

I just have a limited supply, so get them while they're "hot"...;-))

A quick reminder about the upcoming bi-annual exhibit of encaustic work, Brilliant Moments IV, which will take place in September. Anyone who has ever taken a workshop from me can enter up to 3 pieces in the show.

With my upcoming move it might be difficult for me to get out a June newsletter, so I'll talk to you again after we've settled into our new space.

Combing the Sky, 6x12, $295.00

Happy painting!
