| Encaustic Circle Newsletter - November 2011 |
Dear ,
surely you have noticed days are shortening and leaves are falling? We're definitely heading for winter (and my friends in the North Eastern part of North America certainly took the brunt of it!). It's time to heat up the waxes and paint your hearts out, and I have just the special deals for you this month, with two great sales on supplies! More about that below.
If you like to create your own greeting cards with encaustic, you might like to sign up for my Christmas Card workshop, Dec. 3, or take a look at the two videos to get inspiration.
|
Every Sunday in November, from 10 AM - 2 PM, the Penticton Lakeside Hotel will host a Lobby Gallery, inviting scores of local artists.
I'll be there too, with brand-new work, some older favourite paintings and small matted works on paper (easy to send in the mail!). This is a fantastic chance to get a head-start on your Christmas presents and to put some original art under the tree for a loved one.
 | | Latest work: Together under a Bubble Gum Sky, 10x10", framed |
I'm also bringing a stack of beautiful hand-crafted Christmas cards, almost too special to send...;-) They are done in a technique I will be teaching at the Christmas card workshop in December, using rubber stamps and outline stickers. Here are a few samples:

Making your own medium
|
Recently I got my hands on a large batch of wonderful white beeswax, finely granulated, very easy to portion and melt. Usually I make medium on my kitchen stove, but decided we would have more space down in my studio (after I had cleaned off my work table, that is!). So I bought a little double burner and got everything ready: the beeswax, damar resin crystals, a little scale, small sieve with cheesecloth and some containers.
 | | All set! |
Mindy and Mandy were coming over for a medium making session and in short time we had produced more than 6 pounds of medium of different rations.
We fine-tuned the process a bit and now I feel confident to offer you "Medium making Sessions"!
Please let me know when you're interested and we can set up a date.
Max. number of participants: 4
Costs: $40.00, includes one lb of medium
Time: about 2 hrs.

Useful Videos
| |
Here are two videos, showing how to make Christmas cards.
The first one uses the iron to paint candles; a quick and fun technique:

The second video shows how to use stamps in combination with encaustic. This demo uses a dragon stamp, just exchange it for a Christmas stamp! See examples above.

 | | Eileen Goldenberg |
This is the talented and marketing-savvy Eileen Goldenberg, next to two of her paintings on display at the Columbia River Gallery, Troutdale, during the recent International Encaustic Artists retreat near Portland, OR.
Eileen is past-president of IEA and a member of the Northern California/Bay Area Chapter.
Last month I mentioned that we are trying to get a Canadian Chapter of IEA going. I am happy to announce that we have officially petitioned IEA to grant us the founding of the CanWax Chapter and that the board has accepted our request!
For now it will be a pan-Canada chapter, with myself as President and Shary Bartlett as Vice-President. Please get in touch if you want to know more!
Happy Painting!
