| Encaustic Circle Newsletter - July 2011 |
Dear ,
well, the calender shows "summer" and the swimming pool is all set up and ready. (We got a little bit of a scare as it seemed it had sprung a leak, but all seems fine now.) July 1, Canada Day, was warm and sunny as usual, so let's hope for some real Okanagan weather from now on! If you have been waiting for your ordered supplies to arrive: thank you so much for your patience! Canada Post is working again and everything is in the mail right now. You will be getting your goodies in a short while.

RipOff Challenge 2011
| |
The next RipOff challenge will take place from July 4 - July 9 at the Quail's Nest art centre in Oliver. We open with a reception on Monday evening from 6 - 8 PM and will work Tuesday - Saturday from 9 - 3. On Saturday is the big finale, where we all rush to try and finish our piece. Feel free to drop by any time.
We have chosen Grant Wood's American Gothic as our fifth challenge. Each of the 10 artists in our group chose a different artist for their inspiration to re-create this famous painting.
We will have a Frida Kahlo, Len Norris, Katsushika Hokusai, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt, Erica de Ruiter, Alexander Calder, Hildegard of Bingen and a Amedeo Modigliani/Charles Shultz.
Can you imagine the fabulous artworks which are going to emerge next week?!
I'm extremely sad that my radiation schedule is going to prevent me from working at the Quail's Nest during the week, but I will be there on the Saturday for sure. I have already started on my piece and will send Marion pictures, which she will print off and display at the Quail's Nest.
My artist is the Japanese woodblock artist Hokusai and below is my design:

I will also post regular updates about my progress on my blog. And you will find a photo record here.
Do come out to the Quail's Nest and watch how everybody is working on their pieces. It is great fun to see the progress over the week. On Saturday, July 9, at 3 PM, ready or not, all brushes, looms, hammers, knitting needles, torches, sewing machines, scissors, glue etc. will be put away and we will line up all the work for a big display. Don't miss it!! |

 | | SOLD - Icarus |
The Lake-to-Lake Studio Tour has been up and running for the past month. Several people visited me in the studio and I enjoyed showing them around, explaining about encaustic.
My most recent guest was Cherie from Vancouver, with her lovely daughter Isabell. We had a wonderful chat and she left with one of my favourite paintings, Icarus!
Please drop by if you're in the South Okanagan this summer; I'd love to meet you and talk wax!
Happy Painting!
