Encaustic Circle Newsletter - October 2010
Dear ,

Linda, Bethany & Thea
Apples for the teachers
September was an extremely busy month, and one of the  "Encaustic highlights" definitely was Linda Womack teaching two 2-day workshops here in the Okanagan.
I wrote a short blog post about it, with lots of pictures.

Here is Bethany, one of the 24 workshop participants, presenting Linda and myself with a (chocolate!) apple for the teacher!

And then I had the pleasure of meeting so many great IEA friends at the Advance/Retreat in San Francisco. If you have the chance, do make an effort and attend next year's event, which will take place in Portland, Oregon.
I'll make sure to talk about it closer to the date.
Late Summer Salon Update

Attentive audience at Carol's demo
Demo heatable palette

Another great event, although not so large, was my Late Summer Salon, with about 30 people attending.
We gathered at Linden Gardens and chatted, enjoyed refreshments and watched Carol Munro demonstrating her Munro Heatable Palette.
We raised $80.00 for the Penticton Art Gallery. If you were there: thanks for coming out, despite the rain!

Poster Brilliant Moments

Brilliant Moments III
opens Thursday, October 7.
It looks like it is going to be a great show again, with about 40 Encaustic paintings of 14 different artists.
Please come out and meet us at Leir House, Penticton.

On the same evening, Jill Tucker will celebrate the opening of her solo show "Through the Trees" at the Summerland Art Gallery.
If you have a fast car you could attend both events in one evening, but watch out for those pesky deer....;-))

Howard Hersh
Howard Hersh

This month's featured artist is Howard Hersh.
Howard lives and works in San Francisco and has been a full time artist since 1984.
I was very fortunate to be able to visit his studio and meet him during the art tour of the IEA Advance/Retreat late September.
Howard is the master of the pour.

To this end he has two unrecognizable sawbucks standing next to his heated palette on which he works his magic. They look like headless mountain goats, who got stuck in the paint booth of an auto body shop!!Pouring station

Howard's painting surfaces are smooth as silk and shimmer like glass. It is almost impossible to resist the urge to touch his paintings...

Review by Alan Bamberger, artbusiness.com, November 2009
I see a fair amount of encaustics out there and yes, it's a difficult medium, and I suppose that's why in the overwhelming majority of instances, the finished products leave me wanting. Howard Hersh, to the contrary, appears to have mastered the nuances of the craft. In other words, the wax goes where he wants it to rather than wherever it feels like going. As for the elevated essence of the endeavor, according to Hersh, "While separation between races, religions, and species seem to be a political issue; I strive to show differences as a matter of perception. Without words, our minds are free to create associations." And that, as they say, is that.
Bear in the gardenRemember the picture of the two deer peeking through my studio window in the August newsletter?

This time I spotted a small black bear on the lawn in front of the studio! I had to run upstairs to get my camera and I could still capture him further down the garden. Isn't he cute?!

Wishing you many great surprises like that and

Happy Painting!
