Encaustic Circle Newsletter - August 2010
|
Hi !
Chopper dumping water | It's August and forest fire season is upon us again... This year one of the fires came pretty close: it started just behind our house! And I did not even notice it until I stepped outside and heard the helicopters and water bombers flying back and forth from the lake to the hillside... But then things evolved quickly: we were put on a 5 minute evacuation alert and loaded up the cars with photo albums, emergency supplies, net drives and a bunch of my favourite paintings....Fortunately the firefighters did an amazing job and the danger passed. But it does makes you aware of what's important in your life, doesn't it?? |
New work on my Fine Art site
|
Thea Haubrich, My Canada 2, 6x6, Encaustic, 2010 | Thanks to everyone who checked out my new fine art site last month and left me a message.
All names were gathered in my big sunhat and Carol from England won my painting of the irises on black card. She has already received it in the mail and said she was very pleased with it.
I've added some new work to the site. Please take a look.
The painting showing on the Fine Art opening page, Field of Dreams, has just sold at the juried Federation Show last month.
How come your most favourite paintings always sell before you really want to let go of them?! Anyone has an answer to that? I imagine that we put so much from our soul into them, that the viewer cannot help but being drawn to them...

The new Munro Heatable Palette
| I'm excited to announce the birth of a new tool to paint with beeswax!
Many of us here in the Okanagan have been working with pancake griddles and Carol Munro, who developed working on this "hotplate" to a fine art, has come up with this device, together with her husband, Don, who is manufacturing it.
The Make-To-Order Munro Heatable Palette is comprised of a sturdy wooden frame, 7.5" high, which has a hinged flap on one side. A 1/4" sheet of aluminum lies flush on top of the frame. It's 24x32". The good old pancake griddle goes underneath and heats the whole sheet nicely.
I'm testing it right now and find it great for making monoprints and using the smooth Encaustic painting card on top to paint directly with the wax blocks. And you can do REALLY BIG bamboo shapes with the heat-resistant sponges!
For more information you can get in touch with Don.

Exhibition News

Ahhh, Art and Wine... What a great combination! Winetasting at Tinhorn | During the summer months many of our local wineries offer opportunities to show our work. It is always great to see the out-of-towners, glass in hand, browse the displays. The vacation mood and the wine can help with the buying decision...;-)) Sometimes the artists have to take turns and sit for a couple of hours; I did some quick drawings last year at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards. I'll have works in two upcoming winery shows: At Lang's: Thea Haubrich, Luv Ya Bunches, 12x12
 |
"Passion for Painting" at Tinhorn Creek in Oliver, B.C., from August 28 until September 12. Another local show I'd recommend is "A Way with Clay", a display of 98 beautiful pottery items by our local potters guild at Leir House, 220 Manor Park Ave, Penticton. Exhibit hours are 10am - 4pm, Monday through Friday, until Sept 2 ,
2010. The Soup bowls for Penticton Art Gallery's Annual Soup Bowl project are
also on display. More information on "Brilliant Moments III", the third Encaustic Art Show in the Okanagan: Oct. 7 - Nov. 11 at Leir House, Penticton is now available on my website. I'm inviting all artists who work in encaustic and live in the Okanagan to submit work.

Featured Guest Artist: Andrea Bird
|
For this section I'd like to highlight one of you each month. Please email me if you would like to be featured here. My newsletter reaches more than 800 Encaustic enthusiasts, who are all eager to learn more about you! This month's featured artist is Andrea Bird. Andrea Bird | She's an artist and teacher from Ontario. I've known Andrea for quite awhile and we met for the first time face to face at the Encaustic Conference last year, where I attended her excellent presentation on working with the Encaustic iron. This is her story: 'The Hive' Encaustic School in Alton, Ontario by Andrea Bird It has long been a dream of ours to have an encaustic
school in a bright, spacious location, and it has happened! My husband, Dan, and
I found this studio when I was part of a three person show at this restored Mill
in one of the galleries there... 'the hive' has a home! The Alton Mill is a beautifully restored heritage building
near Orangeville in the Caledon hills... filled with artists studios, galleries,
and a fresh food cafe (a satellite of 'With the Grain from Guelph). Situated
beside Shaw Creek in Alton, a side path of the Bruce Trail winds through the
property, leading to the Pinnacle, where there is a lovely view of the
surrounding hills. The Hive, Encaustic School, Alton, ON | We are located in Studio 201, and will be offering
beginner, advanced, and alternative encaustic classes/workshops as well as open
studio times starting in mid-September, 2010. For the full schedule please
check out either: www.andreabird.com or www.waxworksencaustics.com.
There is something called 'Give it a Whirl!' - times to
try it out, and see if this is a medium you'd like to explore. There will also
be 'New Territory' workshops, for those who have been using encaustic for
awhile, and are ready to move into a deeper understanding of the medium. I've
been teaching encaustic for almost a decade now, and enjoying the experience.
After teaching at the Annual Encaustic Conference (where I first met Thea!) I
realize how many people from around the world are falling in love with this
medium! Painting with beeswax, hardened with damar resin is such a
luscious, luminous and spontaneous medium... more and more people are being
drawn to it! The Hive is a place to show our work, and as things
progress, there will be work by other encaustic artists in the space. Please
drop by for our opening celebration on Saturday, September 25th - from 3 - 5pm
to see the space, enjoy some nibblies and wine and say hello. There will also
be demonstrations going on during the opening party!

Fawns visiting the studio | Peter and I spent a few days in Banff in the Rocky Mountains and marveled at the beautiful scenery and disappearing glaciers.
Of course we checked out the local gallery and the first painting I saw was an Encaustic one! It was called "Snow Storm", by Kim Bruce.
We don't want snow yet!! It would be much too cold for these two cute fawns, who were checking out my studio...
Enjoy the rest of your summer & Happy Painting!
