Encaustic Circle Newsletter - July 2010
Hi  !

Nice Feet!Just back from the 4th. International Encaustic Conference at the  Montserrat College of Art I'm still floating on an encaustic cloud-nine...So much to see and learn, so many great friends: encaustic overload!

Carol Munro was my wonderful travel companion. More about her below; she is the featured artists this month. At the right you see our nicely-pedicured feet, which were very tired after 3 conference days and 3 post-conference workshops.
And I tried to blog about our adventures every night...

If you were there, you know what I mean, and if you have missed the conferences so far: try to make it next year. I'm sure Joanne Mattera will make it an even better event than the ones before.

RipOff Artists Event in Oliver, B.C.
Saturday, July 3, we completed our 4th Annual RipOff Challenge!
The Challenge was to create our own version of Lawren Harris's painting Mount Lefroy. 10 artists worked for a week to complete the artwork, each in their own medium.
After a week of ascending Mount Lefroy we finally planted our flag at the top at 3 PM, had a little celebration and a photo-op.
All pieces looked lovely! I think we get better every year...;-)

Launching my Fine Art site
FineArtSite

Encouraged by the recognition and sales of my artwork in the past months I've decided to finally launch my own fine art website, where you can view and browse my artwork and hopefully buy it!
I've included many pieces of my 36" a Day in May challenge and will certainly keep adding artwork in the coming weeks.

To give you another good reason to go and visit, I will raffle off one of my Irises on black painting card under everyone who leaves me a message on the site before July 15.
Just go to "Contact Thea" and write me a few (hopefully favourable!) lines.
Featured Guest Artist: Carol Munro
For this section I'd like to highlight one of you each month. Please email me if you would like to be featured here. My newsletter reaches almost 800 Encaustic enthusiasts, who are all eager to learn more about you!

This month's featured artist is my best friend Carol Munro.
Carol Munro
Carol Munro
She started out as one of my first students, more than 5 years ago, and now is very successful with her Encaustic paintings.

Last month we traveled together to the Encaustic Conference in Montserrat and shared a room for 8 nights: we're still best friends! Aren't we, Carol?!

Carol has her studio in the McLean Creek Valley near Okanagan Falls.  Her painting is influenced by early studies in Chinese brush techniques 35 years ago under the guidance of Master Lam Chin Shek and artist Jack Wise.  Her recent body of work includes encaustic, mixed media and three-dimensional pieces.   Registered as an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, she is also a founding member of the Naramata Arts Studio, established in 1998.

She has won numerous prizes for her work: Her encaustic painting "The Road from Here to There" was awarded first place - the Founding Patron's Gold Award - in Art Visions 2008, a Federation of Canadian Artists National Open Show in Kelowna.

River Run
"River Run" was selected for the Federation Gallery's 2010 Olympics exhibition, "Capturing the Canadian Spirit" in Vancouver.

During the summer of 2010 she is exhibiting at Leir House, Handworks Gallery in Oliver and Lang's Winery in Naramata.

Her painting "The World is Not Flat"  has been accepted for the Federation of Canadian Artists' show  Painting on the Edge, a highly-regarded and highly-competitive annual international exhibition held in late August in Vancouver (geographically 'on the edge').

Swimming pool 2010

Summertime in the Okanagan and my hubby Peter got the swimming pool up again!

Nasty surprise was that the thing had sprung a leak, but he managed to fix it and get it reasonably level.
One of our regular visitors came to check it out!

It's ready for the first plunge; just a little bit warmer would be good. The water temp. was 18C this afternoon...

Have a great summer  &
Happy Painting
!
