Encaustic Circle Newsletter - June 2010
|
Greetings!
Encore! | after a month of writing a mini-newsletter every day, I thought the June newsletter would be a short one, but apparently I still have some writing juice left...;-) Those mini-newsletters were about my 36" A Day in May project and, if you like, you can still see them all on my blog. I managed to paint every day, often more than the 36 inches I pledged, and now have a studio full of paintings. YEAH! Here is one of them, on a 12x12 wooden panel. It will be in the art auction of the Penticton Art Gallery on July 10. |

Yearly RipOff Artists Event in Oliver, B.C.
| For the fourth year I will be involved in this exciting challenge, which takes place at the Quail's Nest in Oliver, June 28 - July 3.
From the press release:
The
"Ripoff Artists" once again rise to the challenge as they scale new heights in
lifting Lawren Harris's "MOUNT LEFROY" during a week of open
studio. So-named
for their annual pilfering of a famous dead artist's masterpiece, the Ripoffs, a
"Group of Nine", have selected the Canadian icon who was the driving force
behind the formation of the Canadian "Group of Seven".
The
collective's ringleader, fabric artist Terry Irvine, known for her functional,
sometimes humorous original creations stated: "I like the simplicity of the
painting, while at the same time, I'm surprised by its complexity". "It was an
easy decision in picking this year's prey", said paper collage artist and
member, Marion Trimble. "After imitating the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt and Georgia O'Keeffe in previous years challenges, it was time to come
home". (Follow the links to see what we did with the paintings of those famous artists...) The nine
artists recreating "Mount Lefroy", a Canadian Rockies buttress on the B.C./
Alberta border, represent several different art forms. Dianne Birnie and Enid Baker are both gifted
members of the Double "O" Quilters and the Fabricators. Multi-disciplined, fine artist JoAnn Turner paints her images on a non-traditional surface. Chosen
from any one of her mediums of pottery, jewellery, basketry or clothing design,
we can expect her piece to be skilfully produced. Kurt
Hutterli's 3-dimensional creations of
recycled mixed media have delighted audiences in past
exhibitions. Barbara Levant, a weaver and spinner for over 35 years, enjoys the
suspense of seeing fabric develop and colours interact as she
weaves. Ripoff participant since it's inception in 2007,
is encaustic artist Thea Haubrich. Russell Work's innovative images last
year were an exciting addition. This year
guest artist, self-taught painter and woodworker, Leo Pedersen joins the gang.
The
skulduggery takes place at the Quail's Nest Arts Centre, 34273 95th St., across
from the airport in Oliver. Opening reception is Monday, June 28th, 6-8 pm. Studio times: Tuesday through Saturday - 9 am to 3 pm. Join the artists during the week as they scramble to a
dramatic climax by 3 pm, Saturday, July 3rd. For
information contact Terry Irvine at 250-498-4156.

Featured Guest Artist: Andreas Herrmann
|
For this section I'd like to highlight one of you each month. Please email me if you would like to be featured here. My newsletter reaches almost 800 Encaustic enthusiasts, who are all eager to learn more about you! This month's featured artist is Andreas Herrmann. Andreas is an artist and gallery owner in Berlin, Germany. I contacted him after I read an interview with him in Cauteria, a German magazine about Encaustic. The accompanying pictures intrigued me and I invited him to be guest artist here in my newsletter, which he happily accepted. A bit more about him: Andreas Herrmann was born February 2, 1971 in Kaiserslautern,
Germany. Since 2000 he lives and works in Berlin. After studying classical
dance and choreography, and after performing on several stages throughout
Germany, Herrmann focused on the arts. Since 2002 he works exclusively in
encaustic painting. In 2008 he opened the producer's gallery mianki. Gallery. Current exhibition: Up to now, Andreas Herrmann's attention was on complexity
and transparency in nature. In his current exhibition he extends this enquiry
to the realm of politics and society. His new works of art gathered in BLUE -
the true color of hope call into question the mechanisms of political power.
Center stage we find once more the concept of transparency - a concept with a
positive connotation that seems to facilitate finding facts and truths. In
light of Herrmann's latest works we might come to find this positive
connotation slightly too simplistic. The photo shows how Andreas brings his art into the room. He takes the image off the wall, by using the motive for cushions, lamp shades or curtains, and invokes a dialog between everyday items and his art. Here you can view a video (in German) about the Lange Kunst Nacht in Leonberg, in which Andreas participated. Andreas would be delighted to get feedback from you on his work and vision.

Off to Montserrat!
|
Next week Carol Munro and I will head east to Massachusetts to attend the fourth annual International Encaustic Conference at the Montserrat Art College!
Looking at the program it's going to be an amazing event again. We also both signed up for three post-conference workshops, so lots of exciting stuff to share with you next month. Last year I took about 600 photos and made several albums in Picasa to share with you. Will do my best to document everything again this year. The picture to the right is from last year: Cynthia Winika, showing how to embed papers.
While we're in Montserrat I cannot process any supply orders. Please be patient: I promise after June 17 I'll quickly catch up!

If you have been following my newsletters for a while, you might have noticed that I'd like to end on a more personal note, often home or family stuff (the swimming pool project comes to mind, or our son's recent wedding!).
This time I want to share with you that my dear hubby Peter is being honoured for his contribution to the high-tech
industry in the Okanagan. He is the founder of the non-profit organization ORIC.
Peter will be made Honorary Fellow of the Okanagan College at the spring convocation ceremony in Kelowna on June 5. Needless to say that I am extremely proud of him!
Happy Painting!
