Greetings!

2. Prize in Show
Velvet Beauty
it seems that the infinite powers of the universe have decided to join forces on my behalf. Not that I did not give them the message! I'm a big believer in steering your own destiny.

I told you about being accepted in 2 juried shows and winning an honourable mention. On top of that, from the two paintings I submitted for the Vancouver show, one won "2. Best in Show" and the other one sold!

It will be a challenge to keep up that kind of pace, but I'll do my best. A good starting point is my 36" A Day in May project, which is underway now. You can still sign up to see how I'm doing (see below).
Encaustic on the Road: Richmond, B.C.

The weekend of April 24/25  I taught two workshops in Richmond. My first host was Adrienne Moore. Adrienne has been a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) for more than 30 years.
We got a bit in trouble as we found out on the morning of the workshop that the studio door had been inadvertently locked, but I managed to "break-and-enter" through the window, so we could still start in time!

The second location was the gorgeous B&B The Doorknocker, home of local artist Jeanette Jarvis. Her studio was huge and we fitted 12 people in.
Both classes went very well. It was great fun to see how everyone quickly imposed their own style to an unfamiliar medium. You can read a bit more here on my blog.

(A short note to last month's painting I showed from the Coldstream workshops. It was done by Cheryl Turner. Sorry for not giving you credit there, Cheryl!)

Featured Guest Artist: Colleen Kindt
For this section I'd like to highlight one of you each month. Please email me if you would like to be featured here. My newsletter reaches almost 800 Encaustic enthusiasts, who are all eager to learn more about you!

This month's featured artist is Colleen Kindt.

Colleen's story:
Imagine a toad, warts and all.  And the warts are lovely and round and raised, just like real warts. Texture, texture, amazing aroma. Encaustic rocks! Toad, Colleen Kindt

I took bee-keeping at Olds College and I had a few hives on our the farm in the early 80's.  Such an amazing smell when extracting the honey at the end of the season.  Positively miraculous that these little workers brought all this bounty to me and made their own wax and propolis from the pollen and honey.  The Queen laid eggs in the cells and everyone nursed the babies along to become the replacement workers.  Lifting the lid of the hive was like looking into another world.

Ken Bourassa, of Atlantis Framing in Calgary, taught me to paint in Encaustic, in a class at Swintons' art supply, and WOW!!  It is amazing.  Making things look 3D is suddenly even more possible.  Love it.
I've been painting for over 20 years in most mediums, encaustic in the last few years, and I am a photographer as well.

Mom, 1946, 2x2 feet
Actually, if I was to pick out my favorite encaustic painting, it would be the portrait of my Mom, Joan Kelly, in 1946, wearing a pearl necklace.  The necklace looks fabulous in wax, and I added a  pearlescent powder sheen over the pearls.

My Mom went and had her portrait taken when she was 16, and actually paid for the sitting herself.  Wish she was still around to ask her why it was that important to her.  Was there an occasion that she wanted a portrait for, or did she need a picture to give to someone?

"36 inches" Challenge

Day 1, 2My "36 inches a day in May" project got off to a good start on May 1.

I did a couple of bamboo studies; one of them shown here to the left.

You can still follow along and see how I'm doing.
Sign up to receive a mini newsletter every day, with a picture of the latest painting, explaining the working method. The more people sign up, the more it would help me to keep on track!

Feel free to participate by painting your own challenge paintings and please share your stories with me.

In the shop: 10% Mother's Day Discount!
Mother's Day Special mamma

To celebrate Mother's Day you will receive a
10% discount on all orders over $50.00 from now until May 17!

It's especially in honour of my own mum, who had her birthday on May 17. Living abroad for most of my adult life I often came to Holland Mid May to celebrate both occasions.

This is a pencil drawing I did of her a couple of years ago.

Being the proud mother-of-the-groom I cannot resist sharing with you this lovely picture of our smart son and his radiant bride, who got married on the Easter weekend.
Hopefully the universe has only good things for them in store too!

Having their cake and eat it!
