Encaustic Circle Newsletter - February 2010
|
Greetings!
with the Olympic Winter Games 2010 over, Canada is turning back to normal, sort of... Canadians cheered their hearts out to fire on their athletes, who were supposed to "Own the Podium", a very un-Canadian slogan which was much criticized. But owning the podium they did, with the most gold medals ever and wonderful athletes like Joannie Rochette, Alexandre Bilodeau and Sidney Crosby. For years to come people will ask each other: "Where were you when Canada won the Olympic gold medal in hockey?!"My answer would be: I was teaching an Encaustic workshop in Kelowna...;-))

Encaustic on the Road: Naramata Elementary School
|
For the second year Encaustic was part of the Naramata Elementary School Art Conference.
The school invites local artists to share their craft with the kids
from as young as Kindergarten. Some of the themes were abstract
painting, portraits, gesso texturing, embossing, pottery, film making
and mosaic.
For Encaustic I asked that the students be at least in 3rd. grade.
Afterall, we are working with hot implements and it would be hard to
keep the little ones safe. It was great that I was able to enlist the
help of two local fellow Encaustic artists Linda and Jane. Look at these cool kids enjoying hot wax!

Featured Guest Artist: Jetty de Roos
|
For this section I'd like to highlight one of you each month. Please email me if you would like to be featured here. My newsletter reaches almost 800 Encaustic enthusiasts, who are all eager to learn more about you! I met this month's featured artist, Jetty de Roos, a couple of years ago in Peachland, BC. She is also Dutch! Unfortunately she does not have a website but she did send me some personal information:
Graduated from the Academy of the Arts in Rotterdam the Netherlands. Worked as a
designer for a couple of years for a large department store, the Bijenkorf
(similar to Macy's, New York). Also worked as a Display Artist in the Netherlands. When my husband and I emigrated to Canada I worked as an art
teacher for the Montreal school board for 7 years. Later we worked for the
government on international exhibitions over seas. When we moved from Ontario to the Okanagan, that was a
total change of life! We do like it in Peachland and the people are so friendly and kind here that we
feel very much at home.

Ever wondered where the name of my little company "TwinLakes Encaustic Art" came from?
Twin Lakes is the place my husband and I fell in love with almost 15 years ago, as we were vacationing in the Okanagan, BC, Canada. It is one of two gorgeous little lakes, yearly stocked with fish, surrounded by mountains and home to a family of bald eagles (they nest in that tall tree across the lake).
We bought a cute cottage there and came back every year for our holiday, until we decided to move permanently to Canada. We stayed there for a couple of months, then bought a larger home not far away.
To make a long story short: It's up for sale now and I thought I'd share it with you! Perhaps you know someone who is looking for the perfect get-away or you yourself have always been dreaming to live in such a place, like we did...
Happy Painting!
