Encaustic Circle Newsletter - February 2010
|
Greetings!
it is much too mild in British Columbia these days! Around now we should be shivering under a blanket of snow, but it has been above freezing point for weeks : not good for the Winter Games... So it was not really necessary for us to escape the cold to Costa Rica, but we had a great time anyhow. The small country is one huge melting pot of colour, sound, smell, taste and shape. Just look at the wonderful way the clouds reflect on the wet beach... This is a painting waiting to happen! Hopefully I can show you my version in Encaustic in one of the next newsletters.

4th Annual Encaustic Painting Conference
|
Fax machines were running hot at Montserrat College of Art on the night of January 15! Less than two weeks after registration started 174 people are signed up. I noticed many familiar names on the list of attendees. I'm delighted that I will be traveling with my dear friend and award-winning Encaustic artist Carol Munro. We're keeping our fingers crossed that we got into all the workshops we signed up for... |

A great offer for returning students!
|
After teaching in the Okanagan for more than 5 years several workshops have become "old favourites" and students sign up for them for the second and sometimes even third time. Although they assure me that they don't mind hearing the same over and over again I do feel bad to charge them for something they basically already know! So I've come up with this idea: if you sign up for a workshop which you have already attended you pay only half price! This applies to workshops organized by me in and around Penticton, unless the course is overbooked and I have a waiting list. The 2010 schedule is on my website. More workshops and events will be added throughout the year. Next Circle meeting is Monday, Feb. 8, 1 - 4 PM in Okanagan Falls. (The image is a monoprint of some wax-covered maple leaves on a canvas bag, done in the workshop "Printing Techniques".)

Featured Guest Artist: Donna Hamil Talman
|
For this section I'd like to highlight one of you each month. Please email me your favourite Encaustic painting. If possible with a short story.
This month's featured artist, Donna Hamil Talman, sent me some beautiful prints in the snail mail from her Sentieri series and gave me permission to showcase one here in the newsletter. Donna explores alternative photographic processes and the possibilities of image transformation. She also is a member of my Ning social network on Encaustic.

Another free tutorial on painting iron techniques!
|
Here's another short YouTube tutorial, which shows how I paint Leaves on a Stem. The petals of the magnolias below are painted with the same stroke. Just load the side your iron with a bit of pink and white wax by running it through the waxes. The trick is of course to get them to connect nicely in the centre, but you can patch things up a bit with the leaves at the bottom of the flower. These, and the leaves on the stem, were added with the Stylus. The videos Bamboo and Tulips in a Vase are not edited yet, perhaps next month...

One last thing I have to tell you about: I got two paintings accepted in the juried FCA show "Spring Renewal", which runs at the Summerland Art Gallery in March! More info + images on my blog. Happy Painting!
