Encaustic Circle Newsletter - January 2010
|
Greetings!
Happy New Year to you! A dear friend send me a bunch of good wishes, among them this one, which I'd like to share with you: May you live in a world at peace, with awareness of the beauty of every sunset, every flower, every child's smile, and every wonderful astonishing beat of your own heart.
Beautiful, isn't it? (Thanks, Jean!) 2010 is the year of the Tiger/Cat and that's why I've included one of my favourite collages: Cougar. The cougar is our Okanagan tiger! I have all kind of cool plans to share with you this year: my 2010 Encaustic Calendar, (which you can view and order on LuLu), exciting workshops, new tutorials, the upcoming Encaustic Conference; so let's dive into this new decade and make some art!
|
Registration for 4th Annual Encaustic Conference
|
The conference will take place from June 11 - 13, with three days of post-conference workshops, June 14, 15 and 16.
Sign up early to reserve your favourite selection of events!

Upcoming workshops: Creating Textures / Advanced Encaustic in Kelowna
|
There are still a few spots open in the workshop "Creating Textures", Friday, January 22 in Penticton. We will play with such different materials as tissue paper and joint compound to create exciting paintings. Then on February 19 I'm offering a new workshop: "Collages with magazine papers", also in Penticton. The painting "Cougar" used this technique, which I learned at the Penticton Art Gallery. Email me to sign up for any of these workshops. Another opportunity to learn more techniques will be at Beverly Rein's brand-new studio space ArtzZone in Kelowna. I'll be teaching a workshop "Advanced Techniques" on Sunday, Febr. 28. We will work on different surfaces with the iron, stylus, palette knife, sponges and scrapies. Contact Beverly for more information and to sign up. The 2010 schedule is on my website. More workshops and events will be added throughout the year.

Featured Guest Artist: Stuart Allen
|
For this section I'd like to highlight one of you each month. Please email me your favourite Encaustic painting. If possible with a short story.
This month's painting, a delightful little abstract, is by Stuart Allen.
Stuart ordered supplies from me last year and I met him in person as I was teaching workshops at Cherish the Thought, a wonderful craft supply store in Port Moody.

New free tutorials on painting iron techniques!
|
It was a long time coming, but finally I was able to shoot a couple of new tutorials on painting techniques with the iron. Here are the ones on Candles and painting Trees with the small Arts Encaustic painting iron. Let me know how you like them and do send me images of your own creations! Later on I'll post the links to Leaves on a Stem, Bamboo and Tulips in a Vase. On my request for candle cards in last month's newsletter I did receive a whole bunch of great little paintings! Thanks so much and for all of you: my card to you is in the mail! |

My Encaustic Canada's Blog, "Confessions of a Waxaholic", is now up and running. It contains excerpts from previous newsletters, my regular Ning broadcasts with the featured artist of the week and some other interesting stuff, like an entry about the Prayers for Peace project I was involved in and a list of things I did in 2009. Please drop in and have a look! Let me know if you would like to have a link to your blog on my blog roll and I'd love it if you would add my link to yours. Happy Painting, sneeze in your sleeve and eat lots of vitamins!
