Providing Human Resource Solutions at the Speed of YOUR Business!

Greetings!

I received quite a bit of feedback on last month's newsletter and feature article, The Generational Gap: "Can't We All Just Get Along?".   So it seems I hit a nerve!   This month I will follow up on the topic by discussing how the Generational Gap can impact the interview and selection process and things to watch out for as the INTERVIEWER (presumably, a Gen Xer or Baby Boomer).  Some of these may surprise you - but remember, "knowledge is power," so please read on.

Next month, we'll continue the conversation by providing tips to Gen Yer's/Millenials and what they can do from their interviewing perspective, as the INTERVIEWEE.  Hope you enjoy learning about both sides of the fence, and feel free to let us know YOUR experiences from either perspective.  This a great converstaion to have!

Also, the Entrepreneur Exchange's annual Member Appreciation Event is THIS WEEK at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville, MD - - and I love it if you could join me!  Please see below for all of the details.  It will be an event not to be missed!

I appreciate any and all feedback so please keep it coming.  Thank you!

Best,
  Amy

Generational Gap:  Impact on Interviewing
Amy Polefrone and Kim Grounds  / HR Strategy Group, LLC

The fact that we now are "naming" our generations (i.e., Baby Boomers, Gen X's, Gen Y's, etc.) implies that they are having enough of an impact on our lives that we need a way to identify them. And the differences between these populations are significant and undeniable. As such, understanding generational distinctions, how people live, work and think, has the great potential for helping to ensure business success. Smart leaders acknowledge this and do what they can to make their environments more suitable and desirable for the "younger" potential employees while working to ensure the "boomers" can successfully interact and manage this incoming workforce.

Identifying and hiring new employees will continue to be a challenge. However approaching the process with a firm understanding of generational differences will significantly increase the likelihood of finding suitable hires to fill your company's open positions.   First and foremost during the interview cycle, expect your expectations to be thrown aside - completely! You will not be seeing formal and proper, wide eyed prospects showing up in gray pinstriped suits, eagerly hanging on your every word. This is not your dad's IBM interview!  You are now dealing with a different breed of candidate.   And this does not make them undesirable, unhire-able, or even rude. Based on the events and circumstances these individuals experienced during their youth, they approach life completely differently.  Again - - Differently - - Not incorrectly.

So while you may have certain expectations, this is what you might actually see in reality:

Small Business Owners, Are you Eligible for the Healthcare Tax Credit?

A local small business qualified for a healthcare tax credit of over $21,000 in 2010 and will again in 2011.  Simply by offering a health insurance plan for employees and meeting the qualifying minimum contribution, this company saved 35% of its employee health premium contributions, more than $40,000 in tax credits in two years.

In March of 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) became law. While many of us are familiar with popular provisions, such as coverage for adult children up to the age of 26 and no pre-existing condition restrictions for children under 19, a lesser known regulation is the Healthcare Tax Credit.
