Providing Human Resource Solutions at the Speed of YOUR Business! |
|
Greetings!
Many of us set out goals for our businesses each year... but how many of your have goals for improving your HR systems and/or workforce in 2011? Paying attention to the growth of your company's #1 asset - PEOPLE - will have huge returns on investment for your company and organization.
Throughout 2011, my goal with HR Strategy Group is to provide YOU with resources and information to improve your organization - to help you improve how you hire, train, and retain the great folks in your workforce. Each edition this year will focus on the STRATEGIC RESOURCES you need to improve how you get the most out of your employees and your HR processes. We are also continuing our "Guest Columnist Spotlight". This month, we are featuring an article about the TOTAL cost of employees, written by Amy Bradbury of Mosaic Business Solutions.
This month, we are focusing on how to develop a GREAT process for interviewing candidates. Get the MOST out of your interviews - set up a great, organized process, and ask specific questions relevant to the job. You'll be amazed at what candidates will tell you (and what they don't tell you is enlightening, too!).
We have helped our clients design and conduct great interviewing processes to hire the best talent for their organizations. We would be honored to help you in your company, so please let us know if we can be of assistance.
To Your Growing Business!

Asking the Right Questions from your Candidates: A Guide to Situational Interviewing Amy Polefrone, MPA, SPHR, HR Strategy Group, LLC |
Situational Interviewing Questions (SIQs) are designed to get you, the supervisor, the most information you can from a potential job candidate whom you are interviewing. The advantage to SIQs is that you get a "real time response" as to how a person responds/ responded/will respond to a given work-related situation. The best predictor of future performance is past performance. SIQs give you a glimpse of how someone reacted to a past situation - and that can allow you to evaluate more effectively how they would react in a situation under your supervision. When you ask the questions, be sure to give ample time for the person to respond in her/his own words. Don't rush the candidate - give them time to think about their answers, formulate their responses, and to be honest with you. If the candidate seems flustered, simply say, "It's okay. Take your time and think about a situation. We all have had a time like this in our jobs. I can wait while you think of an example." Read more . . . .

Payroll Spotlight: How Much Do Your Employees Really Cost? Amy Bradbury, Mosaic Business Solutions Guest Columnist
Employees can be the largest expense to a business; they are the lifeblood to your business. You probably couldn't run your business without them. But, if you aren't managing their true costs, they can drive you out of business FAST!
Here is an example business - his situation is certainly not unique!
John Smith owns a small painting business. He has 8 employees (6 of them hourly, and 2 salaried team leaders). John is very careful when estimating his jobs, careful to include the costs of all the supplies he will need for his job, the time it will take to paint the rooms and even some profit for himself! Every month, when he reviews his Profit & Loss report, there's just enough profit from his jobs left over to cover his office rent - but forget anything extra, especially a payroll check for John! John's a typical small business owner - working harder and harder each day, but earning less and less. He's running out of time. Without some drastic changes, his business will have to close, his employees will lose their jobs, and he will be left with nothing to show for all of the long hours and hard work he had devoted to his business.
