Precision CNC Turned Parts

Greetings! ,

I hope you are all experiencing the upturn in manufacturing as we are this year. Business appears as if it will continue to maintain this trend.  Complications in response times, quick deliveries, shorthanded experienced machine operators, and increased raw material pricing on copper alloy materials including 360 brass are being continually analyzed and addressed.  In this newsletter I have put together an updates on those issues, actions we are taking and some suggestions for you, our customers, so that we may continue to expand on our strong business partnership.

Response time and quick turnaround- Consider 1 year blanket orders for reduced setups and allow extra lead time for uncertainties including material availability and outside services such as plating, heat treating, thread rolling, broaching etc... Despite these challenges, Avanti strives every day to meet all delivery dates. We have hired an assistant in production control to help with better customer communication and support.

Shorthanded machine operators- We have brought on some additional staff in this area which is helping get more machines going. We have also started our new in house training program, enabling our newer operators to get up to speed faster. We are like everyone else, in that the uncertainty of business related politics has caused us to side on being more conservative during unknown times and what lies ahead in 2011.

Raw material-  Due to the increased demand for "bar products" we have seen steady increases in almost all materials but particularly 360 brass. The copper market has been rising steady all year even though there were some decreases or lulls early on.  Lately it has been all increases and brass bar is back up very close to the all time high it reached in 2008.  Avanti Engineering, Inc. feels your pain.   These increases are without a doubt, affecting everyone's bottom line.  We are very concerned about where copper is headed and we are monitoring these increases very closely. We will do what we can to fight and absorb these cost increases and hopefully prices will stabilize soon.  Just a forewarning, that in the event copper & brass prices continue to rise uncontrollably, Avanti will, at some point, be forced to initiate separate line item "material surcharges" to all applicable invoices as a means to recover these terrible increases.

 Other news:

We have upgraded some older 1" 6 spindle machines with newer and better 1-1/4" 6 spindle machines.  We have also added three more single spindle Brown & Sharpe machines with Servo motor and auto tripping capability. These machines will be on our floor and operable approximately October 17th.  Ultimately we will have better high volume multi spindle capability and have better smaller quantity capability including a reduction in setup time.

Copper rises again!

This is the 8th  consecutive  increase of $0.10/per pound since June 17th, 2010.  If further information is needed please go to www.chasebrass.com and see their graph depicting the movement.  Brass is made of 61.5% copper which is the catalyst that's driving these increases in the market.

Prices Rise As Manufacturing Recovers
Material Impacts On The Precision Machining Industry
August 2010

Quick Summary:
The prices of all raw materials that we track rose as follows over the past year:
Aluminum: Up 23% from July 2009.
Brass: Up 28% from July 2009.
Copper: Up 17% from July 2009.
Nickel: Up 70% from July 2009.
Stainless: Up 37% from July 2009.
Steel, Busheling: Up 51% from July 2009.
China Coke, Up 3% from July 2009.

They may not call it inflation...YET. But all of the crucial raw materials we track are updouble
and triple digit percentages. In addition to the fundamentals in our local markets,
there are global issues that add more risk and thus price variability to our industry's raw
materials. The issue of knowing where to find material remains just as important as price in
the current market.

Latest economic index foresees stronger growth by year-end
 Updated 10/1/2010 8:57 AM

The September update of the USA TODAY/IHS Global Insight Economic Outlook Index shows real GDP growth, at a six-month annualized growth rate, slowing to 1.4% in October and November, then increasing in December, and returning to a 1.9% rate in February as housing and employment slowly recover.

The index predicts future real GDP growth (gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation) based on 11 leading economic and financial indicators.

Four of the 11 indicators were positive in September, half the number in August. Although the number decreased, these indicators were strong enough to offset the negative indicators.

Positive indicators include hours worked, the real money supply and stock prices, all of which increased. Also positive was a decline in the

real federal funds rate. This model assumes it can take 12 to 15 months for changes in the real federal funds rate to affect economic activity, so it uses the January 2010 - March 2010 rolling average to forecast real GDP in February 2011.
