Precision CNC Turned Parts

Greetings!

 Welcome to this month's news

General

Average length of 1st shift was 50 hours or higher while sales for machined parts continues to climb since January 2010. Backlogs remain strong for the short term.  We are working hard to make sure all orders are completed on time. We understand how important deliveries are to you and we appreciate your patience as we continue to make aggressive changes to reduce any late orders.

Production

We have increased hours for the Davenport department to 55 hours per week to offset the rising demand. Avanti is currently hiring experienced multi spindle machine operators. Let us know if you know anyone who is interested in applying for this position. More details and an application form can be found at www.avantiengineering.com and scrolling to "Employment opportunities".

Avanti has also been very aggressive in our preventive maintenance program.  Preventive maintenance is essential on screw machines as this allows setups to commence quicker and most
importantly allows us to produce better quality and productivity which ultimately reduces cost! This aggressive approach to preventive maintenance will no doubt help all our customers achieve better quality and service including on time delivery as well as cost reduction.

Engineering

Quotes are increasing in demand both on existing jobs and in new customer activity due to a more aggressive marketing approach. Avanti continues to diversify our engineering options into new technologies, to maintaining a strong, durable position relative to our competition.

Sales and Expediting

Remember to allow sufficient lead time in your computer systems. The MRP (materials requirements planning) system allows you the flexibility to tell your system when to replenish stock based on current on hand inventory.  This sufficient lead time allows for scheduling, setup, and outside services such as plating and
heat treating. Please inquire about sufficient lead times and one of our sales people will be glad to help you. Let us know if you need any special pricing to win a job and we will do our very best to accommodate you. Inquire on how cost savings can be achieved through longer commitments, larger box quantities and or reduced shipments. Avanti is receiving many orders with limited delivery commitments and this almost guarantees stock deficiency either at your plant or ours. Whatever you can do to forecast further out will help us all achieve better delivery performance and reduced costly downtime. With this in mind please remember that we are going into the summer vacation peak season in June thru August! There will be less productivity in these three months than normal so please plan appropriately.

 Accounting

In order to expedite the A/R process for both our customers and Avanti, we are now offering the ability to email invoices instead of using "snail mail".   Please send an email to dstrope@avantiengineering.com if you would like to take advantage of this time and environment saving method.

Thank you for your business and for reading my comments it is truly appreciated.

U.S. Steel CEO sees economic recovery

During the second day of the Association of Iron and Steel Technology conference in downtown Pittsburgh, U.S. Steel Corp. Chairman and CEO John Surma told a crowd of more than 1,000 that he sees the North American steel industry coming out of this recession in better shape than in previous downturns.
One reason, he told the audience gathered for his morning talk, is the economic crisis that led to the recession was not of the steel industry's making but instead the industry was brought along for the ride.
"Last year at this time, we all thought the world was going to end," he said. "It didn't. The dark times will come; they always do, but so do the brighter times."

News from our suppliers!
The price of ingot increased by a little over a nickel in April while the Midwest premium over the LME remained largely unchanged at a little over six cents.  Pricing peaked at $1.17 in mid-April and then retreated.  Year-to-date the average price is almost $1.06 which is 32% higher than last year's average but still not as high as it was in 2006 - 2008 See Chart
