Glessner House Museum Event
Special Program August 14, 2011

Glessner House Museum, located at 1800 S. Prairie Avenue in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood, will host a program by Betsey Means of WomanLore entitled "Wau-Bun: Stories of the Early Days with Juliette Kinzie" on Sunday August 14, 2011 at 2:00pm.

Juliette Magill married the famous fur trader and U.S. Indian sub-agent John H. Kinzie in 1830.  He invited her to share with him the great adventure of life in the Northwest Territory.  In the early 19th century French voyageurs, fur trappers, British soldiers, American pioneers, and above all Native Americans peopled the wilderness of the Great Lakes.  Come celebrate the early days of the frontier with writer, historian, and pioneer Juliette Magill Kinzie.

Betsey Means of WomanLore, presents one-woman performances adapted directly from journals, autobiographies, and personal writings.  The audience will enjoy a complete theatrical experience, authentically costumed and accurately evoking a bygone era.

Glessner House Museum is a National Historic Landmark and the last surviving work by Richardson in Chicago.
Completed in 1887, the museum is recognized nationwide for its groundbreaking architecture as well as its important collection of arts and crafts decorative arts.

The cost for the program is $15 per person and reservations may be made by calling
312-326-1480. The museum is easily accessible by taking the #3 or #4 bus south on Michigan Avenue to 18th Street, and then walking 2 blocks east.

Daystar

Convenient. Safe.  Economical. Practical. Fun.

When you wake up every morning, you have those expectations for your child's activities for the day. Daystar Center provides such activities.

Daystar Center is conveniently located in the heart of the greater South Loop at 1550 S. State along with Overflow Coffee Bar where you can also grab a great cup of coffee or some food.

Daystar Center has a safe, clean environment in the same building as the Daystar School, a pre-K to 8th grade private school.

Daystar Center sets the pricing for classes and lessons at a competitive market rate.  Daystar Center classes teach practical life skills like social aptitude, creativity, and cultural awareness in fun ways.  You child can learn a new language in an immersion setting, a musical instrument using Suzuki methods, theatre and story-telling skills through acting out fairytales, and social skills such as playing well with others.

Daystar Center is FUN!  You and your toddler can do yoga or learn a language together in a place with a scale and "feel" that's great for kids.

Neighborhood Watch Walk
Neighborhood WatchCome tonight at 7pm, get some exercise, and get to know your neighbors better, all while helping to make the neighborhood more secure!

"Smash and grab" theft is the most common crime in our area, and YOU can do something about it, just by taking note of valuables you see exposed in cars parked on the street. Thieves take advantage of these opportunities to break into vehicles and steal whatever they see. We don't want the neighborhood to be seen as "fertile ground" for such crimes.

On Friday evening, we'll meet at 7pm at Cafe Society in their outdoor patio area. We will briefly discuss what we're looking for and what notes to take, and then we'll walk the neighborhood in groups for a little while, getting some exercise and ending up at a neighborhood mixer for a little wine and socializing!

Once we collect this information, the police will look up the owners of each vehicle and send them a note letting them know that they are at risk of theft.

This is our third such walk, and I'm hoping that this will turn into a regular activity, protecting the neighborhood and giving us all a chance to get to know each other better.  We hope to see many of you out there!
