Help to Create a Vision for Northerly Island!

We are pleased to share our invitation with you for a public workshop regarding Northerly Island Park on Tuesday, November 10th, at Spertus (610 S. Michigan Avenue) from 6-9 p.m.  The workshop will include focused discussion of program and design concepts to help move us toward a final design for the park.

Open house viewing will be from 6-6:30 p.m. with presentations and discussion from 6:30-9 p.m.

Your ideas and support are critical to the long-term success of this effort and we urge you to take this opportunity to help guide Northerly Island Park's future.

Project Description:

Northerly Island is a 91-acre peninsula that projects into Lake Michigan, just south of the Adler Planetarium and east of Burnham Harbor, on the Museum Campus.

Over a century ago, Chicago's famed planner and architect Daniel Burnham conceived of Northerly Island as one of the northernmost points in a succession of peninsulas and islands that would frame Chicago's Lakefront with public recreation spaces between Grant and Jackson Parks.  His vision for Northerly Island included lagoons, harbors, beaches, recreation areas, a scenic drive, and grand stretches of green space that would provide breathtaking views of the lake and City skyline.

In the time since Burnham expressed his vision, Northerly Island has been host to a World's Fair, an airport, a concert venue, a bird hospital, and thousands of visitors.  Its future has been the subject of countless conversations, meetings, and design efforts.  This project aims to arrive at a final plan for the park; a plan that is thoughtful, exciting, sustainable, and practical.
