Welcome!
November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and  we dedicate this issue to our dear clients and their families who battle this disease, day in and out.

Easy Living is committed to supporting families struggling with this challenging health issue.  We are currently working with the Alzheimer's Association, GA chapter, to form a support group for individuals & families impacted by Alzheimer's in our Alpharetta office.  Our goal is to hold our first support group meeting in early 2010.  Please contact us if you are interested in attending.  We'd also like to know if you have any special needs or concerns that you would like to see addressed in a support group.

Thanks for your continued support!

Alzheimer's Screening--National Memory Day   11/17/09
Physicians agree that early
detection of Alzheimer's disease and related memory disorders  offers many benefits.  For example, aggressive use of medical treatments in the early stages  can slow the progression of the symptoms.  Additionally,
doctors and families are afforded the opportunity to manage symptoms better, implement helpful lifestyle changes and plan for future care.

To that end, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America will sponsor its annual National Memory Screening Day on November 17, 2009 at various centers across the country, including metro Atlanta.

A Memory Screening is a simple, safe, non-invasive evaluation tool that that assesses memory and other intellectual functions, and indicates whether additional testing by a qualified healthcare professional is necessary. A screening consists of a series of questions and/or tasks designed to test memory, language skills, thinking ability and other intellectual functions. The interviews.  Various types of healthcare professionals may provide memory screenings, including social workers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and doctors.

Consider the following questions in evaluating whether you or a loved one should participate in a screening session:

Am I becoming more forgetful?
Do I have trouble concentrating?
Do I have difficulty performing familiar tasks?
Do I have trouble recalling words or names in conversation?
Do I sometimes forget where I am?
Have family or friends told me that I am repeating questions or saying the same thing over and over again?
Am I misplacing things more often?
Have I become lost when walking or driving in a familiar neighborhood?
Have my family or friends noticed changes in my mood, behavior, personality or desire to do things?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you or your loved one might benefit from one of memory screening sessions to be conducted in cooperation with the Alzheimer's Foundation of America on November 17.

Alzheimer's Prevention Tips
According to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, sunflower
people over 65 can help protect their bodies and brains as they age by incorporating these 15 steps into daily life:

Develop a healthy attitude.  Get focused on your mental and physical health which can make the difference between active senior years or disability.

Exercise regularly & stat trim.  A 30 minute walk daily is optimal. Obesity has been shown to increase health problems and increase the risk for dementia. Eat a balanced diet and take an all-purpose vitamin supplement.

Challenge your mind.  Remain dedicated to lifelong learning and flexing your brain.

Maintain social contacts.  Loneliness and isolation speeds up the aging process and can be deadly for seniors.  Maintain a network of friends to stimulate the brain and the soul.

Deal with depression.  Depression can be a common part of aging, but should not be considered normal.  Depression can speed up cognitive loss.  Don't wait; talk with your doctor.

Limit alcohol.  Alcohol consumption can lead to falls and injuries as well as organ damage.
Consumption should be limited to 1 ounce per day.  Alzheimer's patients should NOT drink alcohol.

Understand your medications.  Take responsibility for understanding your medications and asking questions about potential drug interactions and side effects.  This is especially important if you see different physicians for different concerns.

Find a doctor you trust.  Look for a physician who understands health problems in older persons since medication doses, care strategies, and treatment goals are typically different than in the younger patient.

Control your future.  Plan in advance for emergencies and make your wishes known to family.
