June 2010     newsletter sponsored by First Niagara Risk Management
Executive Director's message
by Bob LoweBob Lowe

Welcome to the May/June issue of the CSIA newsletter. This issue comes on the heals of our successful 2010 CSIA Executive Conference held the end of April in Seattle. For a wrap up of the conference please see below.

Stay in touch with CSIA colleagues year-round by regularly visiting the Connected Community. Pay particular attention to the Conversations area where you can ask questions and respond to others. It's your private community so take advantage of it.

There is no other place on earth you can go to engage in conversation with other control system integrators on how to improve your business.
CSIA booth at ABB
Automation and Power World
I thank ABB and Michael Mikolajczak of ABB in particular, for the booth and opportunity to do a presentation at their Automation & Power World event in Houston in May. Michael made it a point to introduce many key people to me. He has a strong interest in promoting CSIA, especially Certification, throughout their sales, distribution and integrator network. His efforts are greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Brittany Marsala from our office for her assistance at the show. Being there increased her understanding of the CSI industry which enables her to better deal with questions and issues on a daily basis.
Agreement made between international trade association and CSIA FEDA

CSIA has entered into an agreement with FEDA, a European federation of trade associations headquartered in the Netherlands.

The two organizations have a mutual goal of promoting best practices and raising the standard for control system integration worldwide, according to CSIA Executive Director Robert Lowe. "CSIA's affiliation with FEDA recognizes the global significance of quality and uniformity in control system integration," said Lowe.

FEDA members now have access to CSIA's Best Practices and Benchmarks Guidelines - the roadmap for control system integrators to become certified - and all other CSIA membership benefits. FEDA will promote CSIA membership to its members throughout Europe and Asia.

The agreement was signed by CSIA President Lynda J. Patterson, CAE, and FEDA Director André Braakman at the recent CSIA Executive Conference in Seattle. Eight FEDA members attended the conference.
Executive Conference wrap upRegistration now open!

The conference was fantastic! Attendees got their annual "business tune-up" (a favorite phrase of Bill Faber of Yaskawa),  business education and networking.

Unfortunately, everyone has now "come down from the mountain" and returned to the real world - their businesses. So how does the euphoria of the conference continue throughout the year? You guessed it, the Connected Community! It's where the education and networking live on. Stay connected. Stay engaged. Stay informed.

Archives of the presentations and a collection of hundreds of photos from the Executive Conference are posted on www.controlsys.org.

Attendance was at an all-time high, the Westin had a nearly perfect venue, the staff was top notch, and the attendee feedback indicates the quality and content of the presentations was top quality too. Seattle proved to be a pleasing location with lots of opportunities beyond the facility.

The CSIA staff in Madison did a superb job in planning and executing the conference. They are to be congratulated. And their choice of shirts was a hit too!

This will be the final "thank you" to all levels of sponsorships from our Partner members. A special final thank you is extended to Anixter for the wonderful opening reception at the Seattle Aquarium in addition to their platinum sponsorship.

Now for 2011!!  Portofino Bay
The annual Executive Conference will be at Portofino Bay in Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., from April 27-30. Save the date! This venue is absolutely awesome. It's a perfect opportunity to vacation with your family in addition to working. So come early or extend your stay.

Many ideas for presentations at the Conference have been received, but more are needed. The emphasis is on Integrator members doing presentations, so considering doing one. Is there a business topic about which you're passionate and knowledgeable? If so, share it with your peers. Do a presentation! You don't have to be a top-notch public speaker. Remember, for every bit of information you give away you get 10 back.

Joe's List Voigtmann
by Mark Voigtmann, CSIA Attorney

If you attended our session on risk in Seattle regarding "How to Bring Down Your Company in a Few Easy Steps," you heard about the fictional integrator Joe Bell, who saw his company go out of business after a series of catastrophic events.

Here in one place (by request) is a simple list of the mistakes Joe made that led to his difficulties:

1. No succession planning, leading to a draining struggle for control of the business.
2. No anti-sexual harassment policy (or employee handbook).
3. Insufficient property insurance to cover a loss that affected not only Joe's business, but that of his largest customer.
4. An overinflated belief in the ability of his business to function "in a garage" following a catastrophic casualty if needed.
5. No inventory or photographic record of assets.
6. Doing business in an industry and region outside his comfort zone.
7. Not giving prompt notice of a claim to his insurers.
8. No errors and omissions coverage for design mistakes.
9. No contract review and/or authorization policy.
10. No key employee contracts and/or non-compete agreements.
11. No controls on access to funds, leading to embezzlement.
12. No protection of intellectual property important to the enterprise.

Siemens Industry: A broader, deeper value proposition Peter Treible
by Peter Treible, Siemens Manager, Industrial Partners

On Oct. 1, 2009, we formed a new U.S. entity known as Siemens Industry, Inc. This reorganization merges four former Siemens companies into a single operation. Through tighter integration of our Industry Automation, Drive Technologies, Building Technologies, Industry Solutions, Mobility and Osram Sylvania business units, we are better able to leverage a common customer base.

From the outside, this reorganization could easily be perceived as an administrative event, but we view the creation of Siemens Industry as an opportunity to create efficiencies and leverage synergies across previously separate business units. Siemens Industry brings a broad spectrum of technological solutions that can revitalize the aging infrastructure of factories, office buildings, and transportation systems across the United States.

Our businesses are now better aligned to serve manufacturing and building automation markets with people and products that address productivity, sustainability, and profitability in a cohesive manner.  Additionally, the reorganization improves the overall value proposition of the company's U.S. operations to customers by bringing the separate divisions under a single management team.

On a grander scale, this combination of a single management team and business units with common goals provides an opportunity to bundle integrated solutions, rather than selling individual components.

To deliver these integrated solutions to many of the markets that Siemens Industry, Inc. serves, we have developed a world class Solution Partner Program to qualify, educate, certify, and support System Integrators. The program is designed to increase engineering and business development efficiencies as we merge Siemens Industry product and systems expertise with the System Integrators application and industry knowledge. More information about this program can be found at www.usa.siemens.com/solutionpartner.

The business groups within Siemens Industry share a common focus on productivity, sustainability, and profitability. These are critical elements in the revitalization of the American manufacturing infrastructure and a competitive differentiator for the U.S. market. Siemens' organizational structure can facilitate the expansion of manufacturing operations in the region as more foreign and domestic companies expand operations in North America to take advantage of the skilled labor force, as well to hedge against currency fluctuation.

Our recent consolidation of U.S.-based businesses serves not only to streamline administrative overhead, but also to realign and redirect internal synergies.  Through coordinated cross-selling of products and turnkey solutions, we aim squarely at being the premier supplier in the revitalization of America's industry and infrastructure.

Preparing for your audit
by Gordon Cox, auditor, ASR

It's another morning, you just had your first cup of coffee and the receptionist calls and informs you that the auditor is here for your CSIA audit. Your heart begins to race, light headedness and cold sweats ensue. Relax; we have been through this before, and yes there may be a few trying moments ahead but we haven't lost anyone yet!

This auditor would like to set the stage for you and your staff as to what to expect during your CSIA Best Practices and Benchmark audit.

First it is important to make sure you have prepared appropriately and addressing the following items in advance will make the certification audit a positive, successful experience.

  • Download and review the most current version of the Best Practices and Benchmarks document.
  • Review and understand the questions that will be asked based on the auditor checklist.
  • Conduct an internal audit or have a pre-audit to ensure best practices have been implemented to the required scoring minimums.
  • Identify and make available subject experts for specific areas during the day of the audit.
  • Be ready to ask questions and have an open dialogue with the auditor to assess the results of the audit and feedback that will be provided.
  • If you have questions related to scoring or implementation get clarification prior to the audit.
  • Forget the excuses-we have heard them all including the dog ate my supporting metrics (yes it's been tried).

I can think of nothing more relevant than preparing for the audit and what to expect from the audit process. Auditors try and set the stage for the audit process and we do our best to explain the process, what the requirements are and what is expected as far as supporting documents and evidence; however we need your cooperation and often times a lot of coffee to get through the process.

You will be expected to furnish the required documents and procedures as identified in the Best Practices document. They will be reviewed and an evaluation made. The key point to remember is the preamble to Best Practice Document: "Please understand that this document is a set of suggestions of 'what' should be set in place and intentionally hold short of attempting to define 'how' these benchmarks should be accomplished."

As an auditor it is our responsibility to evaluate the implemented benchmarks and take into consideration the fact that each Integrator is different.

Even though the audit is a long and grueling day and we have much to accomplish, I often state that the audit is serious business, but not life threatening and, as such, I would like to keep my record intact for not losing anyone as of yet. I commonly state that an open discussion is appreciated and we could talk about sports or whatever, however all Cleveland sports teams are not to be part of the discussion. Residing close to Cleveland, I have become accustomed to those dreaded words, "Well let's wait for next year."

Please remember that the auditor can also have a certain level of stress during the audit and, as such, we ask to put a little levity into the day. Oh, and one last thing, have some good pastries.

CSIA webinars: archives and updates Webinar

Our Integrator members thank two of our Partner members, Anixter and Corning, for the webinar they presented in April. Mike Fuller from Corning did a wonderful presentation titled Traditional vs. Industrial Network Hardware: Do You Know the Differences? Mike's knowledge and expertise on the subject was evident.

We also thank Vance VanDoren of Control Engineering magazine for his webinar in May. Vance did a very informative presentation titled A Guided Tour of Four Online Directories Specific to Control System Integrators. Vance's understanding of online directories was nicely conveyed to the attending Integrator and Partner members.

CSIA webinars are archived online and are one of the many benefits to membership in CSIA for both Integrators and Partners.

Statistics Committee update PC Romano
by PC Romano, Committee Chair

After last year's conference, the CSIA Statistics Committee set out to implement a complete overhaul of the annual financial survey. Over the last 12 months, we selected a cutting-edge technology platform and implemented a completely redesigned survey.
At the Executive Conference in Seattle last month, this powerful new tool was unveiled.

The new platform is provided by iLumen (www.ilumen.com), and brings the following benefits to our members:
  • Automated data upload
  • Trending of quarterly data and leading indicators
  • Rich and flexible reporting
  • Data security
We are currently in the pilot phase of the program. Stay tuned for the general rollout in the next few months!

Insurance Committee update
by Brian Beaufeaux, Committee Chair
 Brian Beaufeaux
The insurance committee has had a very busy year. We are excited to see our new broker's commitment to customer service. First Niagara has done a great job stepping into their new role and quickly getting up to speed with our clients. They have been getting rave reviews!

The Chubb Insurance Group has been great to work with as well. They are very interested in learning what we do as control system integrators. I encourage everyone to take the time to thoroughly answer any questions they may have about your business. The more they understand the risks the better product and pricing they can give us.

Both First Niagara and Chubb Insurance joined us at the conference this year. They were part of the panel that showed us "How to bring down your company in a few easy steps." Quite a sobering view of the risks we face! Joe, the business owner that managed to get himself in so much trouble, will be back in the future to once again teach us what NOT to do.

This year promises to be just as busy, as we will continue to strive to bring the CSIA membership "Appropriate Insurance Products at Competitive Prices."

CSIA Certification Required!

Do you encounter bid specifications in which CSIA Certification is required? Do you know of companies that will only allow Certified integrators to work in their facility?  Please send me an email and let me know when you encounter certification requirements. I am often asked how often this occurs so I'm gathering statistics.

If you know of any instances since the beginning of the year please inform me of those as well.

One of CSIA's goals is for the CSIA Certified brand to be recognized and required globally by companies and institutions that use CSI services. It is a lofty goal but will be achieved.  Gathering data is one of the tactics of the strategy that is being implemented by the Marketing Committee.

Did you know that there is a document in the Resource Library that has suggested terms and conditions? Are yours weak? Do you have any at all? This document will save you thousands of dollars in attorney fees to write new ones or update your current T&Cs. It is not presumed to be perfect for your business, but it will be reasonably close. Check it out.

Risk Assessment Document

The Best Practices Committee is working on a new document for our Integrator members. It will be a suggested procedure for assessing project risks, including a list of questions that should be asked when developing a proposal. It will be available from the Connected Community Resource Library when completed. An interesting note is that the idea for this valuable document spawned from a question in Connected Community asked by one of our members in Egypt.
