Entire Parkway Open to Traffic

After much hard work by the National Park Service - Blue Ridge Parkway, outside contractors and hundreds of volunteers, the entire Parkway is open to traffic!  From Mile Post 1 at Rockfish Gap to Milepost 469 near the Oconoluftee Visitor Center in Cherokee you can once again take America's Favorite Journey without a detour. The full length of the Parkway reopened on July 2rd just in time for the busy holiday weekend. There are a couple of one lane sections where construction is still underway.  A six-mile section about 15 miles southwest of Asheville (Mile Posts 399-405) will be open to one lane of traffic while the roadwork is completed.  There will be two-way traffic lights in place until completion, which is expected to be in early September.  Other areas where there are one lane traffic restrictions are at Mile Post 400 and another at Mile Post 407.  The one lane restriction only applies at the project site (only for the length of the project area).  Mike Molling, Parkway Chief of Maintenance, in a recent Asheville Citizen Times article said that "Both should be open to two lanes by Sept. 3 in time for Labor Day weekend."... Just in time for our autumn journeys.

TRACK Trail Opens at Pisgah Kids in Parks brings TRACK Trails to Pisgah National Forest
The Pisgah National Forest can now add TRACK Trails to their list - hiking, biking, horse-back riding, back-packing, camping, fishing, swimming, rock-climbing, car-touring, waterfall viewing, wildlife watching, historical area visiting - of things to do when visiting the forest.

On June 12th, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation's Kids in Parks program opened their newest TRACK Trail in Pisgah National Forest. More than 40 people attended the grand opening celebration, including city planners from Brevard; John Mitchell from Senator Burr's office; Ann Childress, Chief of Education and Interpretation for the Blue Ridge Parkway and Randall Burgess, District Ranger, of the Pisgah Ranger District. Several Trail TRACKer Team members were also in attendance and were treated to a "how to do field sketches" guided hike from artist David Williams.

"The Andy Cove Nature Trail, with its swinging bridge, canopy boardwalk and trickling mountain stream was a great trail for kids to begin with...", said Jason Urroz, Director of Kids in Parks; "...But, now that kids and families can use the self-guided TRACK Trail brochures to discover the birds, relationships, trees and other things that make the Blue Ridge Mountains special, it's going to be even more fun... and meaningful."
The Pisgah National Forest Andy Cove TRACK Trail is located at the Pisgah Ranger District's Visitor Center and Headquarters on Hwy 276 near Brevard (1600 Pisgah Forest Hwy).  For more information about, or directions to, the Pisgah National Forest Andy Cove TRACK Trail, please visit our website www.kidsinparks.com or follow this link: http://www.kidsinparks.com/links/5.
