Using Food Science and Technology to Improve Nutrition and Promote National Development: Selected Case StudiesThis IUFoST Handbook highlights successful applications of research and development in improving nutrition and promoting national development in developing countries. Edited by Gordon Robertson and John Lupien, the Handbook is available to readers through the IUFoST website. IUFoST Dispatch: 'Safety Foremost' International Food Ingredients Journal Safety Foremost is the second in the IUFoST series in IFI Journal focused on the global food industry. The authors, Yasmine Motarjemi of Nestle Foods and Leo Gorris of Unilever, argue that food safety has become so complex and relevant that we need to rethink training and education on a global level. Editor's note: Nestle, Mars, Unilever, Ajinimoto and Progastronomia Foundation founded the Industry Council for Development (ICD) in response to WHO calls for industry assistance. IUFoST will be partnering with the ICD in various initiatives.

IUFoST's presence and advice requested
At the request of the United Kingdom Parliament's Food Security Meetings, at which the UN Special Adviser on Food Security Dr. David Nabarro, Prof. Sir David King, FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf and other leaders spoke, IUFoST prepared a submission " Improving the Utilization of Agricultural Raw Materials to Reduce Food Insecurity" and helped to guide the Group of 20 governments as they find ways to combat food insecurity. The article was prepared by Dr. Walter Spiess, with contributions by Dr. M.S Swaminathan, Dr. Colin Dennis, and Dr. Patrick Wall, Dr. David Lineback and Prof. Campbell-Platt. It focused on the contributions that food science and technology make toward global food security. The IUFoST Food
Security Task Force
has begun its work. To become involv ed and to volunteer to be an
activist for IUFoST nationally, just register your interest with your
Adhering Body and us. We invite and encourage each of our Adhering
Bodies to nominate one or more 'activists' from among your membership
to serve in this IUFoST group and therefore to involve you in this crucial work of
global importance.
Please provide your

Distance Education - Call for Mentors
|
|
Ten to Fifteen Food Industry Participants Needed
The IUFoST Distance Education project is ready for initial testing!! Dr. Donald Mercer has volunteered to test the delivery of a module in sub-Saharan Africa using the introductory food dehydration module. To conduct the test, we need to identify 10 - 15 mentors who in turn will identify employees of the food industry to participate in the test. Dr. Mercer will be the primary instructor and the mentors, most of whom will be faculty members of food science and technology departments in SSA, will work with the industry participant and provide feedback on the operation of the process. Thus far seven mentors have volunteered but there is still room for another five to eight. The test will be conducted within the next two weeks. If you would like to be a mentor, please email IUFoST Distance Education Chair, Dr. Daryl Lund at dlund@cals.wisc.edu.

Kenya - Kenya Union of Food Science and Technology (KUFoST) How we can work together: The
year 2008 was a bad one for Kenyans as the country was still feeling
the effects of the post-election violence, which affected everyone all
over the country and had dire repercussions for the agricultural sector. About one
third (nearly 10 million) of Kenyans are food insecure and are facing
starvation due to a number of reasons: 1) There was little food
production in the grain basket region of the country - the Rift Valley
- since that was the epicenter of the post-election-violence. Secondly,
for those who produced, they did not realize sufficiently high yield as
inputs came late and were too expensive.
The areas spelled out in the IUFoST President's message on Food Security will be our focus: 1) "IUFoST
initiates efforts in ICSU (International Council of Science) to work
with other international unions to promote health and well being
through inter-disciplinary effort and projects" 2) "The sub-Saharan Africa based IUFoST Distance Education pilot project" 3) Use of "IUFoST case studies in using Food Science and Technology to improve nutrition and promote national development"
These
are areas in which we could collaborate, as well as promote
training, internships and mentoring of young food scientists and
fostering exchange. I see a win-win situation. We could also
benefit from technical assistance to study Kenya's food systems in
terms of safety, laws, and enforcement of those laws. We do not have a
strong consumer movement. As an example, tonnes of aflatoxin infested maize in
the storage of National Cereals and Produce Board of Kenya was
destroyed at a time when millions of Kenyans faced starvation. Prof.
Ruth Oniang'o, President, KUFoST, Fellow, International Academy of Food
Science and Technology and Member, IUFoST Food Security Task Force ___________________________________________________________________________________________
Canada - Meeting of the two CIFSTS: In
February, representatives of China (CIFST Secretary-General Meng Suhe,
Executive Vice-President Shao Wei and Vice President and IUFoST
Governing Council member, Pingfan Rao) met and discussed food safety
and cooperation with President-Elect Janice Baker of Purina, Carol Ann
Burrell, Executive Director and Past President Anne Goldman
of their 'sister' CIFST in Canada. Anne Goldman and colleagues gave
them a tour and overview of ACCE's activities. The CIFST China
delegation also visited the University of Guelph and met with
Doug Goff, Professor in the Food Science Dept and associate of the
Guelph Food Technology Centre, with research scientists and other
officials of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Quiang Liu, Elsayed
Abdelaal, John Shi and Mansel Griffiths, the head of Canadian Research
Institute for Food Safety.
One
major outcome of CIFST China's visit with IUFoST in Canada and meetings
in Minneapolis, USA with Dr. Mary Schmidl, IUFoST Scientific Council
Chair, is the establishme nt of the IUFoST International Expert Panel on
Food Safety, This has come about In response to CIFST China 's urgent
request to IUFoST and following a series of meetings that began in
October at the IUFoST world congress in Shanghai. The IUFoST
International Expert Panel on Food Safety will deliver expert resource
to China and eventually to other countries throughout the Union. More
information will follow as the Panel and its first activities are
confirmed later this month.
