Interview with a Packaging Specialist
Gordon Robertson looks at the future of packaging
 Gordon Robertson Shows off Packaging
Professor Gordon Robertson from Brisbane, Australia is a food packaging consultant, a Fellow of IAFoST and author of the widely-used textbook 'Food Packaging Principles and Practice'. We managed to catch him in Shanghai last month for a brief interview on the future of food packaging.
In the interview Professor Robertson discusses the push in Western countries towards 'greener' technology, the difference between sustainable packaging and packaging that is sustainable, his own views on the greatest challenges facing greener packaging and what we should expect from the packaging industry in the future.

It is an interview not to be missed for those aware of the importance of food packaging to the future of the industry.  You can find the complete interview on the IUFoST website at www.iufost.org/publications/newsline/
High Level Meetings between IUFoST/CIFST Food Safety Experts and Chinese Health Officials

IUFoST strikes agreement with Chinese Ministry of Health

Beijing Chinese Wall Photo June 2009A delegation representing the IUFoST International Expert Panel on Food  Safety met with  the Chinese Ministry of Health on June 25 to discuss emerging and established food safety issues facing the Chinese food community.

Mr. Chen Xiaohong, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Health, met with the IUFoST delegation in the morning of June 25. He welcomed IUFoST's support and expert assistance regarding food safety management issues in China. As a result of these senior level meetings, the Chinese Ministry of Health has asked IUFoST to join with them in preparing an annual Food Safety Conference, the first to be held in Beijing in April 2010.

The IUFoST International Expert Panel on Food Safety for China includes some of the most distinguished leaders of the international food science and technology community including: Dr. Patrick Wall, Past Chair of the European Food Safety Authority, Dr. Joseph Jen, former Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. Mary Schmidl, Chair of the IUFoST Scientific Council and IUFoST President Prof Geoffrey Campbell-Platt. These members are joined by Dr. Pan Beilei, Dr. Chen Junshi, Dr. Liu Xiumei and Dr. Rao Pingfan of China and  other experts to be drawn from the IUFoST Food Safety Committee. By providing expert scientific advice, the Expert Panel will help those in the Chinese food industry develop a cohesive plan on how to deal with food safety issues along the entire food supply chains and effectively implement the standards and laws needed to  provide safe and wholesome food to the consumer.

The Lebanese Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (LAFST)
Lebanons AB Logo
LAFST was established in Lebanon in 1996 to serve the professional needs of the increasing number of food scientists and technologists in Lebanon. The purpose of LAFST is to provide its membership with opportunities for the exchange of knowledge in food science and technology with a focus of providing a safe, wholesome and healthy food supply for Lebanon. LAFST is a non-political, non-profit association.

The major goal of LAFST is to assist in the development of the Lebanese food industry and food establishments with special emphasis on food quality control and food safety. This is achieved through numerous communications and educational opportunities for its members. LAFST holds meetings, conferences, workshops, and career opportunities for its membership.  During these events, members are able to exchange knowledge on scientific advancements, innovative technologies, and changing regulations and legislation. The association holds a variety of these activities during the year at research institutions, universities and syndicates.  Since 1996 topics at these activities have included: the role of a food technologist, food quality control and nutrition information, and food laws, regulations, and standards in Lebanon.  It has also held workshops on new ultra high temperature processing of Middle Eastern foods and how to start your own food business.  Invited speakers include Lebanese experts along with international scientists, industrialists, government officers, and UN experts.

LAFST cooperates through its membership with other organizations that have
common goals, including the Syndicate of Food Industrialists, LIBNOR in the preparation of food standards and specification, LAND, the Lebanese Association of Nutrition and Development, and the QUALEB program of the MoET.

LAFST is a voting member of IUFoST, the International Union of Food Science
and Technology.  At present, LAFST is seeking links with similar associations in several Arab countries.

The benefits of these food types are tremendous. Dr. Shahidi offers definitions of functional foods, regulatory issues, describes different types and analyses sensory aspects and health effects of the wide range of functional foods available.
