"The renovation of Quincy Center will bring a new vibrancy to our community and much needed development of our commercial tax base." |
Greetings!
At last night's City Council meeting, Mayor Koch and his team presented the City Council with the "Land Disposition Agreement" for the revitalization of downtown Quincy. As I look back at the Quincy Square of my youth, I remember shopping at Remicks, Child World and Coleman's, going to the movies or getting pizza at Napolis, the only business of those I mentioned that remains today. Knowing that my children haven't had any of the experiences that many of us reminisce of "Shopperstown USA", I am excited for what we and future generations of Quincy residents and visitors will experience with a NEW downtown. I look forward to the opportunity to bring businesses to our city as our commercial tax base is currently less than 20% of our tax revenue, thus the homeowners are contributing over 80%. With businesses paying 1 ½ times the residential rate, the additional commercial taxes will alleviate the tax burden to our residents and provide the city the ability to fund resources that are needed yet reduced or eliminated due to budget restraints. It is important to note, that the city's costs for this project will be borne of the downtown area receiving improvements, not the Quincy taxpayer. The Council will hold multiple meetings to review this proposal. I encourage you to attend one of the public meetings hosted by Mayor Koch this month to learn more about the future of Quincy Center.
I have also included information below relative to this week's License, Zoning and Conservation Board meetings, an opportunity for residents to participate in a fire safety quiz to help the Quincy Fire Department win a grant, and information about the Smegs Legs Road Race, where you'll see me cheering on the participants. There are many important issues that I am working on as your Ward Councilor. I encourage you to contact me with your concerns or ideas for our city. Margaret |
