"Register for your FREE MA fishing license and boating safety course."
Greetings!

With spring settling in, it seems we're all busy working on the homes, yards and boats in Ward One. I've been calling this school vacation week our "chore-cation" as we've been using the time to catch up on work around our house. With painting the boat bottom on the schedule for tomorrow and thinking ahead to the boating season, my husband and I both registered for our saltwater fishing licenses per the new requirement for Massachusetts. I've included information below for you to register FREE. There is also a FREE boater safety course scheduled for Monday nights in May.

I strongly encourage everyone to attend the Ward One Drug & Alcohol Abuse Awareness event at 5-7pm this SUNDAY at Broad Meadows to hear the realities of how drug abuse impacts not only the users, but their families and our community and to educate yourself about what signs to look out for or where to get help locally. We have lost too many...

At this weeks council meeting, representatives from the Mass Water Resource Authority gave a presentation to the community on the necessity to release sewage into Quincy Bay during the first March storm. The MWRA has had a tremendous impact on cleaning up our beaches and this release, while disappointing for it's environmental impact, was necessary to prevent sewage backing up into our homes and protecting the public health of our community. The MWRA is currently working on a project in Merrymount as the result of a broken pipe related to the storm. Together with the MWRA, I will host a neighborhood meeting on Tuesday to keep residents informed on the project which will be ongoing through next week.

I have received a lot of positive feedback on these e-newsletters and will continue communications and also encourage you to be my friend on facebook, connect with me via Linkedin or follow me on Twitter to keep up with Ward One Happenings in the interim. I've included links to my pages in the "Contact Information" block below. Think Spring, Margaret
Ward One Drug and Alcohol Abuse Awareness Night
SUNDAY, April 25th, 5-7pm at Broad Meadows

Drug and Alcohol addiction does not prejudice. Kids and Adults who come from good families are falling prey to drug and alcohol addiction much more than you realize. A State Special panel recently concluded that we are in the midst of an 'epidemic' of OxyContin and Heroin use. What we are learning is that no one is beyond addiction, the very young, the well to do, strong families are all equally affected. Anyone who thinks it can't happen in their neighborhood or in their family are fooling themselves.

Join the communities of Adams Shore, Merrymount and Houghs Neck who have partnered with End Drug Abuse Now (EDAN) and Impact Quincy a Bay State Community Service program to create this awareness night. It will be held Sunday April 25th from 5pm to 7pm at Broad Meadows Middle School for a night of testimonials from those who have been affected by this epidemic and information about Drug and Alcohol Abuse. This is a repeat program that was first presented in Houghs Neck in February to 275 people, for those who attended that event they will tell you that this is a night not to be missed. The night is for the entire family with a supervised toddler playgroup, a supervised movie room for young adolescents and an awareness program suitable for fifth graders to adults. There will be FREE pizza and raffle prizes.

Come and listen, show your support, help us increase the awareness of the challenge that is facing our community. We are going share stories of mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, EMT's, ER Nurses all of whom are on the front lines facing this epidemic and who have been deeply affected by drug and alcohol abuse.  Please come and help us as we begin to understand how common and wide spread this problem is. Through awareness we feel we can beat the odds and make sure that our community is not going to be another statewide statistic.

This is a social problem, to ignore it means that we will pay the price. This is a case where "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", awareness costs the tax payer little, the alternative of corrections, courts, police, treatment are very expensive. So if you think that since you are not the parent of a teen you should not join us, you are wrong, everyone in our community needs to work at this problem together.

MWRA Merrymount Project Meeting
Tuesday, April 24, 7pm at Our Lady of Good Counsel

Letter from the MWRA dated April 24, 2010

Dear Neighbor,

The MWRA has found that the pipe break near 75 Chickatabot was more extensive than we had hoped.  We expect to be able to repair the break using "trench less technology" to essentially construct a new pipe within the old, damaged pipe.  We have finished cleaning the pipe and in preparation for the construction of the pipe within the pipe, our contractor, on Monday, will install a "Tee" feature in the existing hole. As soon as the liner arrives on site, probably Tuesday evening, April 27th, we will begin the construction (The liner was made in Pennsylvania and must go to Alabama for chemical treatment and then, on a truck, using two drivers, come up to Quincy).

The liner is inserted in the pipe and then filled with hot water which "cures" the liner and results in a new pipe within the old, damaged pipe.  A boiler must be constructed above the hole to hold and heat the water which will be taken form a nearby hydrant.  All of this preliminary work will be done on Monday and Tuesday and the first of the liner will be inserted and cured on Wednesday.  The curing goes on 24 X 7.  Our contractor will do the work in as unobtrusive a manner as possible.

While the above work is going on near 75 Chickatabot, the bypass pumping must continue on Squanto between Virginia and Assabet.

At this point, we expect that the installation of the pipe within the pipe will be concluded and the site backfilled by close of business on Friday, April 30. (Please note that this is tentative - we will update you if this schedule slips.)  After the repairs on Chickatabot, the bypass will be dismantled (this will take a couple of days) and then the paving will be done (this will take a day or two).

Please note that we have scheduled an informational meeting for Tuesday evening, April 27, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in the lower hall.  Please plan to attend.
