ATwoCongressman Visits Scot Forge

Scot Forge recently hosted a visit from Congressman Randy Hultgren (Illinois - 14th District) at their Spring Grove Division and was provided a plant tour by Scot's President John Cain.  If the old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" is true, then a tour of a forging shop is worth more than ten thousand.  But don't take our word for it; see Congressman Hultgren's comments in the "One congressman at a time" article elsewhere in this Quick Read.

A7One Congressman At a Time

FIA's Public Policy initiative has been building momentum for some time, with our annual Lobby Day in Washington becoming more popular and successful each year.  And beginning in 2010 the industry added another tool to its box with the creation of ForgingPAC, a political action committee organized under Federal Election laws to solicit contributions from eligible FIA members and to make contributions to candidates for Federal office.

As part of our ongoing efforts, we encourage FIA members to invite Members of Congress to tour their plants in order to give them a better understanding of forging and the issues of concern to forgers.  Does that really work?  You be the judge:

At the 2012 Lobby Day, held April 16th and 17th, John Cain of Scot Forge met for the first time with Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL 14), whose new district will include Scot Forge's Spring Grove, IL operations following the 2010 redistricting process.  John extended the invitation to tour the facility, and Rep. Hultgren did so later in the Spring.

Last week we learned how successful that effort was.  On behalf of ForgingPAC, our Washington Representative, Laurin Baker, attended a fundraising event for Rep. Hultgren, which was also attended by Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA 7), the House Majority Leader.  Following the introductions, Rep. Cantor asked Laurin to describe the forging industry in more detail, which he did.

But then Rep. Hultgren took over, enthusiastically describing his visit to Scot Forge and his amazement at the process, the facility, the employees, and the parts being made.  He ended by saying to Majority Leader Cantor: "these are the kinds of companies we want to make sure we're helping be globally competitive."

A9No Defense Layoff Notices Required

Government contractors, including defense companies, do not have to give 60 days' notice to employees that they will be laid off in advance of those automatic spending cuts in January, the Labor Department ruled Monday. The guidance excuses firms from sending out layoff notices that are required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) but does nothing to provide contractors with any assurance that the sequester will not take place. In the letter that went out to state job training agencies, Assistant Labor Secretary Jane Oates said "to provide such notice would be inconsistent with the purpose" of the 1988 act, given the uncertainty about whether the sequester will go forward as scheduled or be stopped by Congress. The guidance is likely to frustrate members of Congress who have called for warnings as early as possible and had hoped to use the threat of layoffs to force an agreement on averting the sequester.
