I have written all of the articles in this edition of my newsletter, but am open to submissions by others. Would you like to present an article for consideration, or perhaps a contrary view? If yes, email: pp@danoconnor.com

For the past 8 years we've been governed
Free at Last!
from the neo-conservative right.

The earliest publication of the Periodic Perspective that I've been able to locate via a simple search of my hard drive is 1996. that makes sense, because that's the year I attended the Stanford Professional Publishing Course, a period of great inspiration in my writing career.

Domestic Violence

Having been abused as a kid (something I am now willing to acknowledge since both of my parents and all of their siblings are dead), I've tried numerous times to work for various domestic violence prevention organizations.

My most recent experience, lasting a little over 2 years was not a good one, and I'd like to hear any advice that any of you may have on the subject.  Click here to continue . . .

Law / Estate Planning

This year the estate tax exemption has moved to $3,500,000 for U.S. citizens and is scheduled to go to zero for next year, 2010!

The question we've all been debating for years is, "Will the estate tax be allowed to stay at zero, or will it return to 55% in 2011 with only a $1 million exemption?"

IN THIS ISSUE:

Outlook for America

l

Here it is 2009 already and what most people appear to have on their minds is, "What's going to happen to the national economy?" And, even more importantly, "How should I adapt to this downturn?"

If I knew specifically, I wouldn't bother writing this newsletter.  I'd take everything I have and invest accordingly.  As it is, I am investing a lot, right now.  But, like all human beings, I like the security of taking smaller steps on surer footing.

But, I do have a pretty good idea as to what will happen in a broader sense.  Click here to continue . . . #

What do I make of the political scene? That's a long story, I suppose. But, alas, I'll try to encapsulate it into a short one.

Specifically the Obama transition appears to be exceeding my expectations in terms of the choices he's making and the signals he's sending regarding where in the scheme of things he will govern the country. This remains true, even after the inauguration.

For the past eight (8) years the U.S. has been governed from the neo-conservative right, which, viewed another way, is like taking your coffee black with a double dose of caffeine. Click here to continue . . . #

"I've lost my job! When will things get better?" If this applies to you, I am afraid that I have to say that things will not get better in the employment market for 18 to 36 months at the earliest. How could I say this, when I've been so optimistic regarding the long term potential of the stock market above?

This is because "jobs" are a lagging indicator in the economy, whereas stocks are a leading indicator. Click here to continue. . .

Spiritual Outlook

...For the past several months, I have had the privilege of serving as the Chairperson of our local interfaith community.  As my term of office winds down, I find this a particularly opportune time to reflect on the experiences I've had during my tenure, so far, and share, as working hypotheses, many of the inferences and observations I've made.

In this role, I've been asked to serve in one way or another . . .  Click here to continue.

Literary Outlook

Years ago, say 13 or so by now, I decided that I wanted to be a writer.  I still think my highest and best use is as a poet.  My dad was manic depressive (now known as bipolar) and there is a correlation between those with that affliction and the ability to write poetry.  I've always thought that perhaps there's a connection to that art for me, although I've never had any manifestations of the disease.

So, even though I've been told over and over again that "the money is in writing novels, if you're going to write fiction," I've begun reading and writing poetry again, irrespective of any anticipated monetary returns.  The starting place for writing . . . Click here to continue.

Travel Outlook

The prospects for travel on our budget are none too good this year.  Sound familiar?  Yes, there are many choice I could have made over the past 13 years that would have facilitated travel and I regret the sacrifices my family has had to make on account of them.  But I believe that God has a plan for each of us and that the plan for me involved some rather impecunious endeavors, nonetheless fulfilling.

Also, my daughtere is getting married this summer and we are just now talking about those expenses.  But, if I were traveling, one stop would most certainly be Kaua'i.  Having lived there off and on for approximately a decade . . . Click here to continue.
