Vermont Legal Aid is happy to announce that we will be continuing our Fair Housing work in 2010. Please call us if you or your clients have questions or problems with housing discrimination. A brochure is attached for your infomation and use. We look forward to working with you on 2010.

Section 8 Discrimination
Faizah just got a Section 8 voucher. Faizah finds an apartment she can afford and the landlord agrees to rent to her. Faizah tells her landlord she has Section 8. The landlord never calls her back. Faizah should call us right away.
 
Family Discrimination
Mike applies for an apartment. The landlord seems interested until Mike tells him he has children. The landlord tells Mike there isn't a play area or lawn and he might want to live elsewhere. Mike should call us right away.
 
Reasonable Modification Discrimination
Kamil uses a wheelchair. Kamil moves into a new apartment that doesn't have a ramp. Kamil needs a ramp to be able to get in and out of his apartment. Kamil asks his landlord for permission to build a ramp at his own expense. Kamil's landlord refuses. Kamil should call us right away.
 
Race Discrimination
Sarah is African American. She's looking for an apartment. She hires a realtor to help her. The realtor only shows her apartments in poor neighborhoods. Sarah should call us right away.

  • Color
  • Sex or Gender
  • Sexual Orientation
  • National Origin
  • Language
  • Ethnicity
  • Religion
  • Age
  • Marital status (unmarried,divorced, civil union)
  • Disability
  • Public Assistance (section 8, food stamps)
  • Children or pregnancy
  • Being a domestic violence victim
 
Housing Discrimination Is
 
Saying Housing Is Taken When It's Not
Someone tells you or you believe that housing wasn't available because you're in a group listed above. 
 
Steering
Someone only shows you housing in certain neighborhoods or buildings because you're in a group on the list above.
 
Refusing to Rent or Sell
Someone won't rent to you, sell you a home, or give you a mortgage because you're in a group listed above.
 
Different Rules or Conditions
There are different rules for you in your housing, such as higher rent or security deposit, and you believe it's because you're in one of the groups listed above.
 
Discriminatory Ads
You read, see, or hear an ad that says or implies that they prefer or discourage certain kinds of people living in their housing.
 
Threats, Intimidation, Harassment
Someone harasses you or tries to scare you away from living somewhere because you are in a group listed above.
 
 All of these things are against the law. Did something like this happen to you? Call us right away!
