LEGISLATION
Governor Martin O'Malley called a Special Session of the Maryland Legislature, which occurred May 14th - 16th to address $500 million in cuts that would have affected the state's operating budget. Necessary revenue enhancers and funding transfer legislation did not pass during the regular 2012 session. The Baltimore Jewish Council submitted new testimony to ensure our community's support of both the revenue bill and "Budget Financing and Reconciliation Act." The cuts threatened funding for numerous programs for which THE ASSOCIATED receives state funding. It also threatened local disparity grants, state agencies, and higher education, and would have terminated 500 state jobs. We applaud the legislature for passing these critical pieces of legislation.
On May 22, 2012, the Governor signed into law the Iran Certification Act - the strongest in the nation. We are proud the state has shown necessary leadership in ensuring taxpayer dollars are not being used for contracts with companies who choose to do business with Iran.
UPCOMING PROJECTS AND PLANNING
This summer, multiple BJC policies will be reviewed including policy statements on capital punishment, education and the environment. Recent Supreme Court cases have contributed to policy shifts at Jewish Community Relations Councils' across the country and it is important we discuss and incorporate these decisions into our policy statements.
The Government Relations staff is also busy planning for the coming year. We are actively working on a Holocaust Survivor meeting with Senators Mikulski and Cardin, discussing priority funding issues for the 2013 legislative session, building closer relationships with our locally elected officials and planning a mock presidential debate which will happen in the fall.

Jewish Greek Dialogue
The newly reinvigorated Jewish Greek Dialogue, in partnership with Congressman John Sarbanes, recently hosted an event at THE ASSOCIATED titled: "Israel, Greece and Cyprus: Democracies for a Prosperous Eastern Mediterranean."
Eliav Benjamin from the Israeli Embassy, Nikolaos Krikos from the Greek Embassy and Nikolaos Manolis from the Cypriot Embassy discussed historic and current relationships between the three democracies. Congressman Sarbanes, who is of Greek descent, helped to guide the discussion, which focused on ways the countries, and their respective communities in America, can work together to strengthen ties.

Participants are eligible for one MSDE credit. The $25.00 registration fee includes breakfast on Monday & Wednesday and transportation to the USHMM.
