MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT
MARIA LANDRY

Thanksgiving is here and it won't be long before 2011 is in our rearview mirror. It is the time of the year when we begin to reflect on the events of the past year and prepare ourselves to look forward and embrace new opportunities.

The very nature of Thanksgiving encourages each of us to acknowledge our blessings and share them with others. As President of NCISS, I am truly thankful for the many members of our organization who offer so much by giving of their time and resources to make a difference for all the investigation and security companies throughout the United States. I want to also say a very special "Thank You" to all our state association members who have continued to support us financially as well as member participation at Hit the Hill and Annual Conferences over the years.  You are an amazing group and I am very proud to be a part of such an active and committed organization.

As we take time to celebrate Thanksgiving day with family and friends, let us not forget our brave men and women still serving in Irag, Afghanistan, and other areas around the world. We owe them and their families our most heartfelt thanks.

I wish all of you a joyous and bountiful Thanksgiving.

God Bless,

Maria Vinson Landry

Investigative Services Can Prevent

Workplace Violence

Workplace violence is a real and serious threat. The following signs might indicate a potential for violence in an employee:

  • aggressive or threatening behavior or remarks
  • bizarre or irrational behavior
  • inappropriate behavior or emotional outbursts at work
  • sudden behavior changes
  • unresolved relationship or family issues
  • serious financial problems
  • depression
  • alcohol or drug abuse
  • comments or threats related to suicide
  • history of violence

Although none of these signs on its own is a determinant for violence, if an employee exhibits several signs, it's important to treat the potential for violence seriously.

  • Background checks - Conducted both before hiring and at regular intervals during employment. Background checks can reveal potential red flags such as financial problems, family instability or substance abuse.
  • Surveillance - Investigators can use surveillance to increase security for HR, executives or other staff members if they have been threatened.
  • Security - Professional security agents can provide personal protection for individuals or groups (e.g., during layoffs or if a staff member has received threats).
