Orijen - Now With Even More Fresh Ingredients!

Orijen Dog and Cat Food

Orijen is biologically appropriate dry food for dogs and cats, made in Alberta! In the next few weeks you will start to see all their foods have undergone some ingredient and formula improvements.

1- More fresh meat! Less frozen meat means the formula is closer to the natural diet of dogs and cats, and additionally, there is less nutrient loss due to processing.

2 - More Meat - Up to 80%! A larger portion of the protein content is now coming from meat sources.  Even though there is more meat, the overall protein content has dropped by about 2%.

3 - ``Top 5`` Meat Ingredients.  Each formula will now contain an even moreWinter Kitty diverse "top 5" meat ingredients, to ensure your pet is eating a variety of meats.

4 - Kibble Shape. Look for a new kibble shape to go along with the ingredient enhancements!

5 -  New packaging. The new Orijen bags have changed slightly, so make sure you read the bag to ensure you are grabbing the flavour you are after. Or, just ask one of our helpful staff to help you out!

Orijen is all natural and their product production is never outsourced! To continue providing you with the best possible ingredients and therefore product, Orijen will also be implementing a marginal price increase December 1st.

Fighting the Epidemic of Overweight Pets

Dog on Scale
Despite being preventable, many cats and dogs are suffering from the ill effects of being overweight. The best thing to do for weight loss is to ensure your pet's food is a high protein, low carbohydrate, low fat formula - which just also happens to be the most species appropriate diet. Proper food, controlling the amount of calories they eat, and lots of exercise will get them to lose excess weight.

Pet guardians often overlook treats which contribute to total calories consumed in a day. Giving treats is okay, just make sure your treats are good quality. Many treats on the market are loaded with ingredients you should stay away from if your pet is trying to lose weight. Even if they are appropriate ingredients, make sure to keep track of the calories or cut back a bit on their food at meals.

Do not be fooled by the many food formulas out on the market for weight loss/weight management, as many of them have very little to do with health.  For example Purina's Veterinary OM Canine formula:

"Whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, soybean hulls*, soybean germ meal, soybean meal, pea fiber,

Purina Vet Diet

wheat gluten, poultry by-product meal, animal digest, powdered cellulose, tricalcium phosphate, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), salt, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium carbonate, copper sulfate, brewers dried yeast, calcium pantothenate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.Q-4560" (ingredient source:www.purina.ca)

Remember that your pet should have a low carbohydrate and low fat formula. Dogs and cats do not need or utilize carbohydrates effectively, and they contribute to weight issues. The first two ingredients in this formula are corn, giving this a high carbohydrate base, followed by protein. However, instead of good sources of protein it contains some of the poorest absorbed protein sources, such as soy. There is no health providing food in this formula.

The true test would be if none of the vitamins and minerals were added to this food. How healthy would the dog be? Without the added vitamins and minerals, most foods would be seen for what they truly are (first class tickets to disease), but with the vitamins the decay is slowed and is less obvious.

Do not be blinded by marketing or the fact that your "vet sells it". Look at the ingredients that are foods and check our webpage list of ingredients to see if those foods are healthy. The formula above would not pass that test.
