APPLES!!
1st of all, disclaimer. I have a weird thing towards Honeycrisp apples. I like them a lot, like too much - as if they are fulfilling some type of masked nutritional deficiency. But I don't want to go the doctor, because, I don't know, I just don't want anything to change. Honeycrisp? Crazy delicious!
Okay, this is why we love 'em - but don't quote me as a doc on all this stuff - I just read it somewhere. Oh yeah, don't peel 'em.
10. Respectable amount of fiber (pectin) - 4 grams. This decreases our LDL (bad cholesterol) by blocking the receptors.
9. You get all the fiber for only about 95 calories. Everybody in the world (self included) is telling us to cut our dinner portions in half and eat it again tomorrow night. Easier said than done, right. Apples are the key - they fill us up - all for 95 kcals.
8. The peel has ursolic acid (makes us slim). Ursolic acid lowers O-bees-city, increases our kcal burn, increases our brown phat (good thing), and increases our muscles (never bad).
7. Five a week will improve our lung function. Are you kidding? No - it's the quercetin.
6. Vitamin C - it has 8 mg - improves our immune system (Hey, have you received your flu shot yet? Here's a good one - when you do, scream like a 2nd grader after they deplunge. The nurses (and physician partners) love it. Seriously, good stuff.
5. May fight cancer - yup. Had to read it a couple times, but the French did a study in '04 that showed a decrease in colon, liver, and breast CA. What have we got to lose, right?
4. They keep us away - get it? We're doctors...Oh, forget it.
3. Study this year showed a decrease in diabetes related to apple consumption. The anthocyanins (make things red, blue, and purple) are looking like responsible party.
2. Brain Power - definitely increases it. Think about, don't you feel so smart after eating an apple? It increases our acetycholine which plays a role in improving memory and helping in the fight against Alzheimer's.
1. Sorry, I guess I only had 9, but aren't those enough. Wow! |
