Greetings!

Good morning! We had so many of you share your success with us recently. Thank you! Many of you are getting 150 minutes or more of exercise each and every week. Very cool. Just Walking - that's all we have to do to get the benefit.

Most of you are aware that we don't hide anything. That is my segue into last Sunday evening's incident. A few of you shared the YouTube links of what the ABC/NBC affiliates aired (thank you). Most of you, however, probably have no idea what I'm talking about. What follows is what was happening "behind the scenes". (Names have been changed to protect the innocent).

It happened immediately after dusk this past Sunday night. One of our more recognizable participants, 'Bob' was walking his dog (Pomeranian/Newfoundland mix) along the bike path.  One of our newer, more enthusiastic walkers was driving by and recognized 'Pete'. He quickly became distressed. It was very concerning to 'Bob' that 'Pete' was getting exercise in a  non-Walk with a Doc event. What followed was unfortunate.

In short, our newer walker 'Bob' was too emotional to be understood by the fine people at the Emergency Medical System (EMS). The dispatcher could only make out "Illegal", "heart attack", and "Scooby Doo". They apparently were obligated to send 4 hook and ladders, 2 paramedic squads, a slew of policemen, and a water rescue vehicle.

I caught this circus on the way home from my guitar lesson and curiosity got the best of me.

"What's going on officer?"

"The gentleman over there in the Lycra was concerned that the man with the dog was performing an illegal activity and called 911."

He looked down at my shirt. "Are you the Walk with the Duck guy? Would you mind straightening out this mess? It's probably your fault."

Gulp. "Thanks officer"

I found Bob on the sidewalk. His left arm extended, his index finger pointed right through Pete. The dozens of flashing lights were illuminating his face. It was a reddish-purple the depth of which I had never seen. He stood frozen next to a well-loved baby blue AMC Pacer straddling the curb.

"This was NOT in the newsletter! This was NOT in the newsletter OR the website (www.walkwithadoc.org)!!

I believe there is foam coming out of the right corner of his mouth. He doesn't appear concerned with this.

"He is out here slashing his risk for heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, depression...

(Bob becomes tearful and is unable to talk for a moment)

just by walking his dog. He's getting rid of arthritis strengthening his memory, improving his self-esteem. Look at him - he thinks it's so easy! He's smiling?!! That SON OF A -----! (at this point I had to forcibly restrain Bob)

"Bob! Bob! Bob! - Eeeasy big fella. Pete is doing the right thing. He is taking initiative and making a better life for himself, his family, and quite honestly his dog."

"Don't pee on me and tell me it's raining!"

"Hold on Bob, you can do the same thing. If you found the Fountain of Youth, wouldn't you go to it everyday? It's right here - this bike path we are standing on is our ticket to great health. We will live much longer, but more importantly, much better. Now what do you say we send the fire trucks home and go get a beer?"

Bob sheepishly grinned, "You mind if I ask Pete?"

"Not at all Bob. Not at all."

"Nancy, does David still see patients or does he spend all week writing this crap?

Walk Away Pain
Women walking and having fun

The following is a summary from Arthritis Today. It was sent from one of our walkers, John Volpi, who was not 'Bob'. He could have been 'Pete', but he wasn't.

The article states that they looked at 462 people who walked three times a week for six weeks. Their activity lasted an hour including warm-up and cool-down. They obviously found that it reduced arthritis related pain and discomfort and improved their overall physical functioning.

They gave the following additional tips that we are in agreement with:

1. Strengthen your core - add yoga moves to your walk. This takes pressure off the spine.

2. Instead of walking on the balls of your feet, shift your weight while walking. Walk up and down hills whenever possible.

3. Keeping your head up (and not forward) will keep your spine in line

4. Increase your time, not your speed to keep injuries down (Amen!)

5. Don't over or under extend your stride. The walk should be at your own pace.

6. Walking poles can provide balance

7. Try walking on soft surfaces instead of hard surfaces like concrete.

Lots of cool news this week. Our webmaster
(www.brewhousemedia.com
) is finalizing a website portal that allows communication between all the walk leaders.

We are sending out tons of tool-kits including 10 to various Indiana cities. We heard from a couple hospital systems teaming up in Troy, NY to make it happen.

Dr.Rick Kratche, our Cleveland Clinic champion has arranged for a very important presentation in October that will catapult Just Walk nationally.

Lastly, I'm honored and excited to be presenting Just Walk to the great people of Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland this weekend.

Thank you for all of your feedback. It allows us to shape the program to try and best fit everyone's needs.
