Greetings!

Good morning.  Hope this morning's newsletter finds you well.  There's a beautiful Thursday (and weekend) in front of us, and wasn't Modern Family great last night?

The buzz around Walk with a Doc (WWAD) HQ this week has been surrounding how fortunate we are.  Fortunate to see everyone stepping to the plate and making this happen.  None of it would be possible without Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.  Anthem's belief in WWAD has provided us with the funding, resources, and support to successfully start new walks around Ohio and the rest of the country.

Anthem, if you were a flavor of ice cream - we would pick you, put you in a large waffle cone, and eat you up (even if they had Double Dark Chocolate Fudge).  Did we just say that? Yes we did.

Anthem - thank you for your incredible support of Walk with
a Doc.

WWAD Would Like Your Help
LettersWe can do this

With Walk with a Doc going viral, we are humbled to receive requests from future participants on a daily basis.

Now, we need your help.

In order to facilitate this growth, our staff has developed a letter to give to any doctor - your doctor, a family member doctor, a friend doctor, a doctor you haven't met yet - any doctor.  This one page letter quickly explains the program and how the physician can easily play a role with Walk with a Doc - large or small.

If you can help our team (team = you, Kathryn, doctors, everybody) please reply to this email that you would like 'X' amount of letters and we will get them to you.  The letter will be signed by Kathryn, you, and myself.

We will handle all the costs that are involved (as long as you don't need a Porsche to drive it to the doc's office).  We also have a little somethin', somethin' (gift card) for those who have a physician contact us regarding getting involved with the program.

You can affect many, many lives downstream by taking this small action.  Thank you in advance for your valuable time.

Red Yeast Rice
Red Yeast Rice The latest
The Archives of Internal Medicine published an interesting article this week on the supplement Red Yeast Rice.  For those unaware, this natural "alternative" has monacolin K, the cholesterol-lowering substance in lovastatin.

The issue at hand is the striking difference in amount of monacolin K per bottle dependent on the brand (0.2 mg to 14.5 mg).  In addition, some of the bottles tested carried a toxin that has not been tested in humans, but can cause kidney damage in some animals.

Ok, here's my take (this is my opinion and I'm not necessarily representing the opinion of other WWAD physicians).

Careful with these natural products!  This study is a good reminder to talk these products over with your physician.  Just because the bottle says All-Natural and they charge you an arm and a leg doesn't mean it's good for you - or safe!  Honestly, as physicians, we root for the vitamins and natural supplements to do well in studies, and if they do (e.g. fish oil) we tout them.

If they show no benefit (unfortunately most of the time), I worry about all the people continuing to spend hard earned money on them (they don't take them off the shelves).  Our patients are also subjecting themselves to many unnecessary side effects.  Please, please have a good reason to take this stuff.  The benefits you get by exercise blows these products away 1000x over.

In addition to your own doc, feel free to ask our physicians their thoughts at your local Walk with a Doc - that's why we are here (JT).  You just might save yourself a lot of money.

Photo Frame We want you in the office
We would like to fill up our office with pictures of you.  We are asking for any framed photos that we can display at WWAD HQ.  We will take any pictures up to and exceeding poster-size.  You can bring them to a walk, to our office, or send them to our address listed at the bottom of the page.  Don't be shy.  We know you're good lookin' and we want to show you off to our visitors.
Walk with a Doc - Cleveland Clinic
Great video
We are very proud of our teammates at the Cleveland Clinic and the tireless commitment they have shown.  Thank you to Carrie Wolfe, Dr. Kratche and all the dedicated staff and physicians that continue to amaze us.  Congratulations to them as well for just adding the eighth Cleveland site.
Too cool.  Our office is loving this video (page 11-12 is WWAD).
