Congratulations to the Pelotonia Staff and riders for their tremendous efforts leading into this weekend's ride.  Greater than 4000 embark tomorrow in a wonderful event that has raised millions in the fight against cancer.
Be safe. Be strong.  Be hydrated.
Greetings!

Good morning! Thank you for putting up with these newsletters!

Welcome to our Annual Back To School Edition.  What that means I don't know, but this morning we do celebrate the addition of a whole new crew of Ohio State University Medical Students to our readership.  You are bright, you are beautiful, you are tired, you are the future of medicine.  Get some sleep and exercise, it's good for you.

Just in case you are wondering, this week the entire Walk with a Doc staff is reading the book Switch, by Chip and Dan Heath.  We are breaking away from our usual genre (we typically pick books with lots of pictures and happy endings).  This one is highly recommended.  And no, I don't want to be Oprah (okay, maybe a little), we just like the book.  *Med students - please stick to Gray's Anatomy - probably more pertinent this quarter.

As you read, you may sense that we appear slightly more well behaved in this week's communication.  Why is that David?

Sister Ruth - we humbly welcome you to our newsletter.

Sister, I apologize in advance for all of the future weekly Walk with a Doc emails you are to receive in the upcoming months/years.  Kathryn writes a lot of inappropriate content, God Bless Her.  As her employee, one of my responsibilities is typing her newsletters.  If you become concerned with what you read, you and I should talk and I will share with her what and how she needs to change.

This could be the most important article you read in this newsletter

This article was summarized from the ACC's CV News Digest.

It turns out that certain newer prescription blood pressure pills (ACE inhibitors/calcium channel blockers) are no better at preventing heart disease than older, run-of-the-mill generic diuretics (water pills).  Data from a 13 year study of 33,000 Americans has shown that there was no difference at all between generic water pills, and more expensive drugs in preventing strokes, heart attacks, and death.

Water pills come in at a fraction of the cost of these newer, more 'exciting' anti-hypertensive medicines.  $25-$40 dollars a year vs. $400-$600 annually.

In my experience, these generic diuretics are very well tolerated.  Let us, however take this information one step further.  If you are on prescription drugs, I strongly recommend reviewing your entire list with your personal physician. There are important, newer studies coming out constantly. It is very possible that you are either (a) on something that can be replaced with a drug in another class or (b) on something you may not need anymore.

Hold us to task.  We like helping you save hundreds of dollars.  It makes us feel good.
This Saturday...and next Saturday
What's going on in Columbus?
10TV logo
Funny you should ask - there's a lot going on tomorrow.  We will all be walking at our regular times and locations (please check www.walkwithadoc.org).  Our numbers are growing tremendously - thank you.

In addition to the many walks, we are excited to have a booth at the 10TV Health & Fitness Expo (Greater Columbus Convention Center, Hall D).  If by any chance you like being inside on days with heat indexes > 100, please feel free to come by.  You can grab a pedometer, talk with a doc,  and maybe even share a funny story with one of our Walk with a Doc hosts between 10-5, both Saturday & Sunday.

The following Saturday, August 28th, we will be taking a group bus to the AHA Walk downtown.  We have a limited number of seats left on the bus.  So if you are interested in reserving a spot on the bus with us, and/or you want to be on the Walk with a Doc team please call 614-714-0407.

If you have to leave a message, please share if you want window or aisle, smoking or non, and whether you are interested in bumping up to first class (further away from me - I refuse to ride anything but coach).

There will be further details on departure and arrival times and meeting locations (Highbanks) in next week's newsletter.   As always, pleeease wear your Walk with a Doc shirts.

If you are awaiting a walk in your area, hope is on the way.  This week alone we received very encouraging information from southern Columbus, Dublin, Richland County, Cleveland, Washington County, PA, and central Connecticut.  We will continue to update our website, Twitter and Facebook (both accessible from www.walkwithadoc.org) as exact times and locations unfold.

See you Saturday!
