Greetings!

Good morning! Gorgeous day isn't it?  Hope your week is excellent.
A woman approached me in the library and asked, "What's Walk with a Doc?"

This is what I said:

New friends. Jeeps. Cool, sunny mornings.  Eliminating heart disease. Family. Being inappropriate. Coffee.  Good moods.  Unity.  More Saturday doctor visits = Less Monday doctor visits. Freedom. Beaches. (She walked away at this point...I kept talking).  Pedometers. Laughing. Farmer's Markets.  Nurses. Self-esteem. Stopping cancer before it starts. Mountains.  Removing all perceived patient/physician barriers. Good tunes. Nature. Teamwork.  Knowledge is Power.  Comfort.

Then the librarian came by and asking me to stop talking to myself. That was embarrassing.

We would love to have you join us at one of our parks this Saturday, July 24th.

Dr. Mary-Lynn Niland will be wooing the crowds with a 4 1/2 minute guitar riff at the Westerville location - 9 am.

I will be discussing the intricacies of the German Invasion on Pearl Harbor (not showing off, just a history major...at Michigan).  Highbanks (Big Meadows Picnic Area)- 8:30 am.

Park of Roses Walk this week will be on hiatus (not convening).

Update - Today we are sending Walk with a Doc start-up kits to Licking Memorial Hospital and Shelby, OH - the Mayor wants to get the party started up there.

Facts about the Amish Community that you may not know...
Our Executive Director
The following article is taken directly from this week's Walk with a Doc Newsletter - Cleveland Clinic Edition. Thank you Carrie Wolfe - well stated.

When you think of the Amish Community, you may think of all the yummy home made dinners and bakery items that they are known for.  There is even an Amish family in Ohio that boasts a one year waiting list to come and enjoy a cooked meal in their own home.  Wow, that's impressive!

Something I bet you don't know is that the Amish Community only has a 4% obesity rate, which is far from the rest of us in the country coming in at a whopping 31%!!! Now are you totally confused?  How can Amish eat all those delicious foods and still maintain a healthy weight?  Well, I'll tell ya, it's called WALKING!

The average Amish man walks 18,000 steps per day and the average Amish woman walks 14,000 steps per day.  The rest of us... yeah, not so much.  The rest of us walk an average of only 3,000 steps per day, well under the recommended 10,000 steps per day.

So the moral of the story is, take advice from the Amish and keep on walking!

Lance's Big Day
Our Executive Director
After a 13 tours and a record 7 victories, today marks Lance's final mountain stage in the Tour de France.  Through all of the recent talk, there is one thing that can absolutely never be questioned. The Lance Armstrong Foundation's success.  Livestrong continues to provide hope, inspiration, and resources to millions of people affected by cancer.  Today it seems appropriate to salute Livestrong's staff, there tireless CEO Doug Ulman, and Lance, for the heroic effort they put forward everyday.  Here's hoping for a couple more fireworks on Col du Tourmalet...Godspeed Lance.

I have to go put my dog's retainer in (just got his braces off Tuesday), but before I do - I want to say this:

We offer a sincere thank you for all you do in support of Walk with a Doc. Maybe you walk with us. Maybe you walk on your own.  Maybe you've 'referred' a friend.   One thing is for sure - if you've stomached this many newsletters, you've undoubtedly done a lot along the way to aid the growth of the program.  Thank you for all you've done and continue to do.

See you Saturday,

David
