Greetings!

Good morning!

The following letter will be sent certified mail on Friday, July 16th, 2010 to Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation in Winston-Salem.

Dear Krispy Kreme President (Doughnut Buddha),

Good morning! My name is David Sabgir and I am a member of a non-profit movement entitled Walk with a Doc (www.walkwithadoc.org).  We are a very simple program that is growing quickly - we added an 18th location to the web this week (with many, many more coming)!

In brief, large groups of us meet at various locations around the country and enjoy healthy breakfast food, discuss a relevant medical topic, privately answer any personal medical questions, check blood pressures, and then walk at our own pace.  Last week, we may or may not have had 6 dozen glazed Krispy Kremes present (that smelled delicious!).  My guess would be that they were extremely popular! Okay, here is our conundrum.

With all due respect, your doughnuts, although fantastic, are not necessarily "healthy breakfast food".  This is what I am proposing to the Krispy Kreme Korporation - Let's rename these things! I would leave this to your brilliant marketing department, but something along the lines of 'Healthy Wheat Germ Roundies' or 'Organic Yeast Rings' - we could even stick them in a big green box that said Healthy Choice (like we find in the frozen food section). They of course would still look, smell, and taste so wonderful! We would just 'tweek' the marketing angle.

Then let's say we do something else fun - like switch around some of the numbers a little bit?  For example, instead of the label reading Calories - 200; Protein 0 grams - it could say Protein 200 grams; Calories - 0.  You see what I'm getting at? Very small, hardly noticeable changes.   But, it would allow us a little 'wiggle room' in having your product at more walks.

I hesitate to make any suggestions to such a reputable, well run company - but I humbly offer up that this might help expand your market?

Thank you so much for your valuable time.  Very much look forward to your thoughts.

Respectfully,
David

Hydration is Boss
JenniferWater, water, and more water

At the 2010 Health Care Newsletter Writing Convention this February (Mesa, AZ) we all took our annual oath to discuss hydration/heat safety during the summer months.

1. Please try and walk early or late in the day - the sun is really less hot at 5, 6, or 7 am. I would love to see a study on that.

2. Drink water like it's nobody's business - this counts for days where you don't exercise (I know - you've never heard of such a beast).  If you have heart or kidney failure - please check with your physician. Hydration needs to be an ongoing process.  You've had enough water when your urine is clear or straw-colored and you are urinating every 1.5 to 2 hours.

If you feel strongly about sharing this information with us at the walk, tell Kathryn - she's not a doctor but she is very bright and fascinated by medicine.  This is good practice for her.

3. Wear protective (and wicked) clothing if possible - please ignore if you listened to rule #1.

4. Plan on and accept going slower than usual. Why? because it's hot out - that's why.

5. Eat smaller meals more often - my approach to life anyway. High protein foods (like 'healthy' doughnuts) increase metabolic heat.

6. If you follow steps 1-5 and you are still not feeling well, stop and live to fight another day.  You ever see the smile on someone's face in the ER during an ice bath immersion? My point exactly.

*I have seen lots of symptomatic dehydration in the office over the last 4 weeks.  Please heed rule #2. "It might just make you feel better" -Rosie Grier

**Why is there a picture of Aniston? What would you rather see a water bottle or Jennifer?

This Week there are Walks Everywhere!
Our Executive Director When and where?

We are walking fools this weekend.  We encourage you as newsletter recipients (read WWAD Ambassadors) to come bring your friends and neighbors. Maybe stop at the Worthington Farmers Market afterward? I don't know, you are the boss - it's your weekend, it's your call.  I'm a big fan of the Farmer's Market

Please check out our website (www.walkwithadoc.org) for the times and locations around the country.  As I shared with Krispy Kreme, we added our 18th to the site this weekend.

Also over the past 5 days, we've had very cool conversations with Athens, Cincinnati Children's, MetroHealth Pediatrics, Toledo, Akron, and Flint, MI.  We are humbled and honored and we will make it happen for you.

If this leaves you unsatisfied - please call us at 614-714-0407 where operators are standing by.

Thank you once again for being a leader. Your neighbors see you walking.  Your friends need to walk with you. Your family needs you to walk - so you are around for a long, long time.  It's fun. It's easy. It's sexy.

See you Saturday,

David

Our thoughts are with our Cleveland brethren.  Rumors are not true that LeBron switched due to preferring WWAD - Miami's location.  There were many other factors that played a more significant role
