Greetings!
Good morning! Hope this morning's newsletter finds you well. Might have been a tad moist this week, but Saturday looks to be beautiful.
A lot of you are just getting to know the program - we love that. Historically, there have been only two Saturdays every year that the Walk with a Docs in Central Ohio have not met. One is this Saturday, because of Race for the Cure*. We've done this every year since our inception. This year it has been an honor to come to know their talented executive director Katie Carter. She has been a great resource and very helpful to our program.
The second Saturday we skip is the Saturday of Discovery Channel's Shark Week. The marine biologists receiving this maybe the only ones aware of the study (now landmark) published in June 2007. This was a double-blinded retrospective analysis performed at 68 sites around the world. The Journal of Woods Hole reported that internationally, sharks tend to be 34% more aggressive when being portrayed in a negative light by the media. With the majority of our current walks centered in the Midwest we were all the more concerned to read that regionally (Great Lakes) the spike in attacks is even more dramatic (46% increase).
Over the past several years, several have argued that we are walking in parks not terribly close to large bodies of water (save WWAD - Cleveland Clinic and Miami). My response to that? I'm sorry, but if being overly protective of our participants is a crime - lock me up and throw away the key. We care about our walkers - that's the whole reason we are here.
*Race for the Cure registration is currently available in person at Macy's Easton in the furniture department (2nd floor) from 10-9 today and 10-6 tomorrow. It is available on Saturday (race day) at the Riffe Center from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Race organizers expect to top 50,000 people! If you have never been, it is an incredible experience to be a part of. If you have been, I'm sure you are going back. For more information please go to www.komencolumbus.org.

Wow! What a Saturday that was! 1st Annual Come Out & Walk, Garden, & Play
Thank you to Dr. Wendy Anderson, Dr. Mary Lynn Niland, WWAD director Kathryn Stephens, and many others for organizing a fantastic day. Helicopter photos estimated between 400-500 people, 75-100 physicians, and a very cool drum band. If you were at the walk and did not see the helicopters, there is a reason, they were invisible helicopters.
Nationwide Children's Hospital and Franklin Park Conservatory were fantastic partners and Walk with a Doc is already looking forward to doing this all again next year.
WWAD World HQ has been having a blast this week. We have had great conversations with impressive new friends in Cedar Rapids, IA; Billings, MT; Lorain, OH (latest CCF walk); Thunder Bay, Ontario; and the British Columbia Medical Association. Not imaginary friends, new friends.

"Baby there's a shark in the water." - VV Brown
"Contrary
to what most people say, the most dangerous animal in the world is not
the lion or the tiger or even the elephant. It's a shark riding on an elephant's back, just trampling and eating everything they see." - Jack Handy, Deep Thoughts - Saturday Night Live
