Greetings!
Good morning! We hope this newsletter finds you well. Today, as always, we are glad you joined us. Maybe it is inspiration from the Edison visit. Maybe it is the smell of fresh cherry blossoms in the air. Whatever it is, we have made significant progress with the walk this week (i.e. we have exciting news to share). Please read on.

Walk with a DDDoc
WWAD will be in 3D for the very first time this Saturday! It is absolutely amazing.
Before we get into details, I would like to specifically thank Bryce Robinson (Avatar) and
Michelle Chrislen (Clash of the Titans) for their selfless generosity in making this Saturday happen.
This Saturday everything will appear as it is happening right in front of you! If you are wearing the glasses, certain people will actually seem closer than others...that are far away. We did complete a 3D 'dry run' after last week's walk and learned a few things.
First, if something/someone seems like they are really close, do not reach out and swipe at it or try and hit it. You may injure yourself or someone you care about.
Second, if it feels like an orange, apple, or banana is coming straight at your face - try and block it. One of our visiting medical students from South Dakota has been extremely excited about us being in 3D. Excitement to the degree that he has been throwing fruit at people's faces. We have made a decision not to confront him on this. There is strong concern we may squelch his passion for the walk.
Third, some of you (like myself) may be tempted to video the walk and play it back in 3D. The recordings will surprisingly appear as 9D and may cause partial-complex seizures in poodles. *Important - once the glasses are removed from the dog, the seizures will almost certainly stop - however, for precautionary reasons we recommend having all pets out of the room during any playback.
*If our recent numbers hold true, we apologize that we will not be able to provide glasses for everyone. Please consider bringing some from home, so you are guaranteed to capture the entire experience that is Walk with a Doc in 3D!
**Some may choose not to walk in 3D. That is absolutely fine. There are plenty of great opportunities to do this within Highbanks. Once you have completed your 2D walk, please feel free to stop by for refreshments.

Walking (with a Doc) prevents...arthritis?!
|
|
Exercise prevents arthritis!
It is understandable that most of my patients think that exercise will cause or worsen their arthritis. Surprisingly, not true.
Several years ago, Northwestern University faculty studied more than 3,500 people in their
50s and 60s with arthritis. They were interested in seeing if exercise could
prevent disability from arthritis.
Study participants getting our recommended amount of physical activity -- at
least 30 minutes per day, five days per week -- were least likely to become
more disabled by arthritis during the study.
Let me say this, anecdotally. We are responsible for 'clearing' many, many patients for knee surgeries. It is exceedingly rare that we are clearing someone who has participated in regular exercise over their life. In my experience, I would say that the overwhelming majority of knee surgeries are due to too much stress/pressure/excess weight on the joints. Something that working together, we can prevent.
1 in 5 American adults have been diagnosed with arthritis - half of
those over age 75. This costs us billions of dollars each year. In our country, as well as several others, it is the No. 1 cause of
disability.
Arthritis provides one more example, at least for the majority of these cases, where the ball is in our court. Let's take control and help prevent ourselves and our loved ones from this crippling illness.

This Saturday...and next week
|
|
Check this out!
We've got a lot of great stuff coming up.
April 10th - 0830 we are in our spot at Big Meadows Picnic Area of Highbanks - aim for the pavilion that has lots of reds and blues and looks out of focus (until you put your glasses on). Free coffee, water, healthy snacks. If you bring a friend you will get more free coffee, water, etc.
April 16th - 3:30 - Walk with a Superhero...and a Doc. The Archie Griffin walk at Fred Beekman Park on Campus.
April 17th - 0830 - our spot at Highbanks. This is the Wellness Community Walk at Highbanks feat. Craig Krenzel. The Wellness Community is a fantastic organization that provides terrific benefits to cancer survivors. We will discuss all of the magical powers exercise has on cancer. In addition, please bring 5 or more food items to give to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

Saturday morning should be in the 50's with NO chance of rain. We would love to have you join the party. Come on! Everybody's doing it.
See you Saturday,
