Greetings!
Good morning! Hope your day is off to an excellent start.
April 9th, 2010 will mark the 5 year anniversary of this fantastic voyage we call Walk with a Doc.
We are fortunate that our forefathers had the vision to bury
a titanium-coated time capsule at the very first Walk with a Doc. This vessel was originally intended to
be opened at the sesquicentennial anniversary in 2155 - I couldn't wait another minute.
In a very private, and surprisingly emotional ceremony this Monday evening - the Walk with a Doc Time Capsule was unearthed. I would be honored to share a few of the many contents with you at this time.
An 'Organic' Gallon of milk - buying 'organic' products was
a very common trend of consumers in the early part of the 21st
century. Hindsight is 20/20, but
the next time capsule will not include perishable items. *Our deepest apologies to the entire
Martin family. I take personal responsibility for letting Bernice open the milk
container. On the brighter side,
how about modern medicine! 3 days in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber has
essentially cured Bernice's IBPI (Inappropriate Bovine Product Intoxication). We expect a rapid transition from the ICU to Stepdown.
My Ironman Timex watch - Now certainly wishing I hadn't
spent the majority of 2 summer months searching for it. The next time capsule will have all
contents prominently listed.
A movie, Batman Begins, recorded on a modality known
as DVD. The people of the early 21st
century would place these "digital video discs" in a "player" and sit around in
their family units spending time laughing and crying over the images put forth
on the screen. These people of
yesteryear would often enjoy "popped corn" during these events.
This weekend, Walk with a Doc - Highbanks will convene in the Big Meadows Picnic Area of Highbanks at 0830. We will have plenty of Goodies (unfortunately, not Ciara), nurses, engineers (electrical, not structural), docs, etc. Come join us for some free exercise!

Walking (with a Doc)...Treats High Blood Pressure!
|
|
It really does
Many of us have hypertension and all of us do not like
taking medications. All of us also
do not like heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.
Exercise, at 30 minutes/day for most,
if not everyday of the week has been proven, time and time again to lower blood
pressure. Even a single workout
can lower your BP for a major portion of the day (up to 22 hours). With the
initiation of simple, moderate intensity exercise (walking) you can expect a
systolic drop of up to 10 mm Hg.
I
get asked everyday, "Which medicines can I stop?" As patients, the ball is in our court. Here is a very good
way to give your doctor the option of stopping one or more of your blood pressure medicines.
In addition, you may have seen the study released from the
University of Chicago this week showing loneliness causes an increase in
systolic BP of 14.4 mm Hg. All the
more to reason to come walk with a doc...and 200 other friends.
*Disclaimer - Check with your physician first. (i.e. Please
do not skip your medicine after you go for a walk and say "the Walk with a Doc
guy said it was okay.")

There are three people that I promised to mention and are
most deserving of acknowledgment in this week's newsletter.
The beautiful, the inspirational Cheryl Niekamp in Atlanta
is getting it done! Congrats on Rocking the ING Half Marathon with a personal
best this past Sunday.
The beautiful, the dynamic Holli Smith of WWAD - Washington, PA - Your
Mountaineers have navigated into the Sweet 16. Would love an OSU-WVU rematch in Indianapolis?!
Lil' Wayne -Only 348 days left on Rikers Island. Keep the chin up
Weezy.

Keep making it happen. Keep setting the example.
See you Saturday,
