Greetings!
Good morning! As in the past, it is sincerely an honor to have your time. We are extremely proud of Step by Step Academy, Goodwill Columbus, Wellpoint, and so many others that are bringing employee wellness to the forefront. You are doing this because you want healthy employees and lower premiums. You know what? You will get healthier employees and lower premiums. We have truly been humbled and excited to be included in the kickoffs of so many of these cool programs. We are aware of certain things.
We are aware that famous rockstars ask for special items in their dressing rooms when they perform.
We are neither famous, nor rockstars, but we, too, have some special needs.
For future presentations, we would like to include here, our Official Walk with a Doc "Rider". For those unfamiliar with this term, a "Rider" is a an addition or amendment to a document such as a contract (Webster-Merriam).
WWAD Rider Three (3) jars of Extra Crunchy peanut butter, nuts removed. Creamy peanut butter is not an acceptable alternative. Eleven (11) cases of Diet Mountain Dew - heaven in a glass. Ironing board and iron (that goes to "6") Two (2) boxes of Corn Starch (brand does not matter) A guitar strap A Yo-Yo (by Duncan) An 8X10 signed/framed Glossy of Bea Arthur (from Maude era) on the West Wall of the room.
Golden Girls Fan Club (GGFC) - before you start sending me mail, please consider this. At the end of the day, I'm not a Maude fan, I'm not a Golden Girls fan, I'm a Bea Arthur fan. It just happens that her acting was at its purest when portraying Maude. A matter of fact, there's many a Friday night where you'll find me on the couch watching Rue, Betty and the girls mix it up on TV Land. There are multiple ways to enjoy Bea. Life is good.
Please read on to find out the latest from Walk with a Doc World. |

This Saturday, 0830 at Polaris Food Court! Walk with a Doc - North Columbus
We thank Mid-Ohio Foodbank for their wonderful hospitality last week. This week we are back at Polaris Fashion Place. This will be an Old School walk. I don't mean "BLUE! - You're my BOY!) Old School. I mean we are getting back to basics. Working on the fundamentals. Picking 'em up and putting 'em down. Quite simply, we're healthifying (made it up). Taking a chunk out of our 150 minutes/week.
We are delighted and privileged to be sponsored by Fenway Medical and Chris Rich this week.
Please catch Chris' blog at http://fenwaymedical.com/care-blog.htmlChris looks absolutely nothing like Blue. So, when you come to the walk and want to thank Chris - don't look for someone like Blue. While our average age is on the younger end, it is entirely possible that someone may show up that does look like Blue, maybe even a lot like Blue. If you were to approach and thank him, he may get confused. Not because he's older, just because someone he doesn't know is thanking him for simply showing up to exercise at a mall. Murphy's Law would ensure that Chris was standing to the side watching the whole interaction take place. Chris would then begin wondering how Dave described him in the newsletter to lead people to think he looked like Blue. Don't get me wrong, Blue is a good looking man, but a man 60 years his senior. The last 3 paragraphs comprise 34 seconds of your life that you will never get back - I'm sorry.

Walking (with a Doc) Reduces Risk For...Premature Death from Cancer
Last year, a study from Finland showed that men who exercised 30 minutes a day halved their risk of dying prematurely from cancer, mainly GI and lung cancer. The authors shared that physical inactivity over a prolonged period of time might be a "key factor in the initiation of cancer development. The lead author is Sudhir Kurl MD from University of Kuopio. I sent him an e-mail because (a) I'm really feeling his groove with this, and (b) I wanted to get an email from Finland (nothing yet).
The researchers adjusted for age, smoking history, alcohol consumption, BMI, total calorlic intake, fat and fiber.
I won't bore you with more details (no offense Dr. Kurl)
But, to answer your probable next question, they speculate that physical activity protects against cancer in many possible ways. The increased activity level affects hormonal concentrations, intestinal transit time, prostaglandin levels, antioxidant enzyme activities, with of course the beneficial effects on energy balance and body mass that we are already aware of.
Good stuff, isn't it? We have a weapon to fight the bad guys, let's use it.

The Stephens Family
I would be remiss not to share that the coffee the last 8 months has been sponsored by Kathryn and Matt Stephens, our director and her husband. I know - crazy! They care about the program and they care about you. Thank you Stephens family.
The Stephens Family is also turning our new office (Thank you Mount Carmel Health Systems) into a perfect Walk with a Doc World Headquarters. We publicly thank you for all of your handy work in making our WWAD office beautiful.
