February 11, 2010
Greetings!

Good morning! We want you to hear this before it hits the media tomorrow.  On February 12, 2010 the governing board of the Walker's Transcontinental Federation (WTF) will be filing sanctions against Just Walk! A Walk with a Doc Program based out of Columbus, Ohio.  It marks the culmination of a 29 month investigation stemming from events that took place at Highbanks Metro Park in the early fall of 2007.

A guest speaker, Ms. Helga Johannsen, gave a 12 minute talk on how walking 30 minutes five days a week had transformed her life.  Some of you may remember her by her size; Helga is 6'3", 227 lbs with only 3.6% body fat.  Helga had mentioned that just 8 months previous she was 5'4".  In her discussion, Ms. Johannsen mentioned some 'special vitamins' that aided her in recovery after her walks. Unbeknownst to Helga, and Just Walk, her supplements had been on WTF's list of banned substances since 1967.  A curious matter of interest, they were the first item banned by any governing body of any sport, and are currently illegal in all countries but two.

What will be the practical implications of the WTF's decision?  In essence the walk that Ms. Johannsen spoke at, as well as the 4 subsequent walks she participated in (before her altercation with Park Ranger Neal) will be stricken from the record.  Walkers present for those five Saturdays will be asked to turn back their pedometers equal to the distance they walked when Helga was present.  All 2010 future presenters, (Archie Griffin and Craig Krenzel are exempt) will be given the opportunity to pee in a cup.  The 'A' and 'B' samples are to be refrigerated at the home residence of the Executive Director (Kathryn Stephens in this case) in an unlabelled container until (a) they turn positive or (b) five (5) years have passed.

We appreciate the relationship we share with you and our ability to communicate openly.  This news is always hard to share.

This Saturday

Valentine's WeekendWe are back at it this Saturday.  Many of you commented on us successfully making the cancellation tickers this past weekend - thank you.  Also, thank you ABC, NBC, and CBS for the class you showed placing us on the ticker during this trying weather- ESPN, The Food Network, and Animal Planet would not return our calls.

We are looking forward to the 13th at 0830 in the Food Court.  There will be plenty of what you have come to expect.  Everyone should have 'fresh legs' after being cooped up this past week.  Our office diagnosed 8 cases of Cabin Fever in the office yesterday, fortunately there is minimal cardiac involvement with the Midwestern strain of Cabin Fever.

This Saturday will be fantastic, and next Saturday (February 20th) will be blow-the-doors-off ridiculous.  The 20th will be a Wake the Kids/Call the Neighbors walk.  There will be very healthy, very delicious, very free dark chocolate covered strawberries (full of antioxidants), a major announcement, many special guests, and a lot more. Please circle February 20th on your calendar - we promise it will be worth your while.
Walking(with a Doc) Prevents...Colon Cancer!

Colon

Exercise not only goes a long way in preventing colon cancer, but men with colorectal cancer are more likely to survive if they exercise regularly.

A study out of Washington University in St. Louis has analyzed several decades of data.  They found that women who exercise the most (5-6 hours/week) were 23% less likely to develop the disease vs. those who exercised the least (only 1/2 hour a week).  The benefits can come from any type of exercise; walking, swimming, jogging, biking, etc.

The findings are even more dramatic in colon cancer survivors.  Dana-Farber researchers studied 668 men with colorectal cancer and found that the men who had moderate physical activity were 53% more likely to be alive and free of the disease than others who were less physically active. Moderate activity is once again described as the equivalent of 1 hour walking for 6 days/week.

Plain and simple - Exercise appears to be the single strongest prevention tool for colon cancer.
