Walk with a Doc

Please look for our Director Kathryn Stephens' inspiring story to
be featured in the February edition of Columbus Monthly. This will be
on newsstands next Monday (25th). In addition, many have asked
about the TV crew present on Saturday. They were filming for Strides
in Medicine. This will air on ABC, Friday January 29th at 5:00. Thank
you for your interest and thank you Mount Carmel Health Systems.

Good morning!
We hope this morning's newsletter finds you well. If it does not find you well, please check out the picture - it will charge you up. Is that not the coolest thing you've ever seen? A Great White trying to halt a military operation by eating the soldier on the rope ladder.
No worries. The guy was totally fine (because the picture is a fake) - but it still gets my blood moving everytime I see it.
Once again, we have a lot to share this week. Please read on. As an aside, if you have any comments, questions, or concerns - please feel free to respond to this or future newsletters. We appreciate and use your input.

New Home!
For those of you keeping score at home, Walk with a Doc -
National is moving into a new home - shortly.
We have outgrown our current structure and we are extremely
excited about our new expanded facility (Please stay tuned for details on our Open House with complimentary bug juice, cheese cubes, and tours every
hour on the half-hour.)
If anyone
is interested in donating furniture to a worthy charity - we are all ears (we need lots of it). And a forklift, if anyone has a used
forklift, that would be great (a yellow one would be sweet, but if not yellow - we totally understand).

Last Saturday
Usually the headline is This Saturday, which I will address
in a second, but last Saturday? Are you kidding me! We don't know exactly how many people were there, but our
hearts were full. It was an
absolutely phenomenal turnout. We
still had plenty of coffee, food, water, nurses, sphygomanometers, Walk About magazines (Thank you Pam), and doctors to go around. The same holds true for This Saturday
(8:30 a.m. Polaris Food Court). Plus, we
are excited to be joined by our special guest from the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. It's like free exercise credits, it is almost too easy.

Exercise Prevents....Alzheimer's Disease
We're a broken record - I know. We're sorry - but
exercise is the answer (or a large part of it) for so many health issues that
we may face. The physicians and nurses see it in the office all day long. In 2010 (Twenty Ten), WWAD will take time focusing on many of the health issues we face. Specifically, the dozens of illnesses that can be prevented with exercise.
Today's column is on Alzheimer's Disease
Dr. Ronald Petersen, director of the Alzheimer's Research
Center at the Mayo Clinic, says: "Regular physical exercise
is probably the best means we have of preventing Alzheimer's disease today,
better than medications, better than intellectual activity, better than
supplements and diet." But, then again - what does he know?
A study out of the University of Chicago in 2008 was
intriguing. The study used mice bred to develop Alzheimer's type plaque in the
brain. Some mice were allowed to
exercise and others (were instructed to sit on couch and play the Xbox 360 for a
minimum of 8 hours a day). The physically active mice brains had 50 to 80
percent less plaque than the brains of the sedentary mice and they (exercising
mice) produced significantly more of an enzyme in the brain that prevents
plaque.
A recent study out of Columbia University showed that people
who exercised the most were 37% less likely to get Alzheimer's. In addition, those who were in the top
third of both exercise and healthy diet were 59% less likely to get Alzheimer's
than the lower third. A lot of
people think that there is nothing we can do to help our cause against this disease, turns out there is quite a bit we can do. Let's get it, before it gets us.
