Season's Greetings from Walk with a Doc
|
|
Greetings!
Happy Holidays! First, we would love to see you at our Winter Doc Walk, this Sunday, in the Easton Community Room at 11:00 a.m. Please note the day, time, and location change. Our staff has a great open house planned. Now, if I could turn down the lights for just a second.....
You may be familiar with Chris Van Allsburg's book, The Polar Express. For those new to the story, a boy is magically transported (via Polar Express) to the North Pole where Santa and the elves are about to give the first gift of Christmas. The boy is offered anything in the world, yet he chooses a very simple gift, a bell off Santa's sleigh. Santa proceeds to cut the bell from a reindeer's harness and the delighted boy then slips it into his bathrobe pocket. As the clock strikes midnight, the reindeer pull the sleigh up into the sky.
When the children return to the train, the boy realizes the bell has fallen through a hole in his pocket and is now lost. He is heartbroken as he returns to his home.
In the morning, his little sister finds one small box with the boy's name on it among the presents under the Christmas tree. Inside is the silver bell. The boy and his sister are enchanted by its beautiful sound, but, surprisingly, their parents cannot hear it. The boy continues to believe in the spirit of Christmas and is able to hear the ringing of the bell even as an adult.
To us, you are the child who asked for the silver bell. You realize, despite the challenges that lie before us, the life we aspire to is right in front of us. All we have to do is look, listen, and believe. Your unending commitment to your health and the health of others is that silver bell.
In 2005, we started coming together for these walks to get in shape, improve ourselves through knowledge, regular exercise, and share in our common dream of making it easier for others to do the same. Together, we've seen our friends lose significant weight, lower blood pressures, cholesterol levels, and blood sugars. Many of us have come off medicines and are dramatically improving the quality of our lives. We've had a remarkable year, yet the best is coming.
We know that 2009 will be our most successful year to date. Something we would not be able to do without the strong support of the physicians and staff of OhioHealth, The Ohio State University Medical Center, Nationwide Children's Hospital, and the Mount Carmel system. This is because together we are looking, we are listening, and we are believing.
Okay, we can turn the lights up again.... |
Holiday Cookies
I asked my wife, Kristin, if she had time to make cookies for the walk on Sunday. She replied, "Sure but why don't we make it an exchange?" I feel as comfortable talking about a cookie exchange as I do discussing The View or defunct boy band 98 Degrees. My current understanding is that, in addition to all of the other giveaways, we will have cookies for you, if you bring some, you can trade with others.
